ok, I've begun! :woot:
I'm using 4.5 dpn and Peridot Cotton Fleece [all season luxury cotton yarn - 80% cotton/20% merino wool]
It took me a minute to figure out how to do a 'yo' at the beginning of a new needle, but I'm good :yay: after viewing one of the videos on the 'view videos' tab.
I'll post an image after I've done at least an hour on this.

We'd love to see how you are doing Lynn.
Okay people! I took a break from knitting blankets, needed one really bad. LOL
So, Rebecca sent me a dishcloth pattern knitted in cotton yarn. (Thanks R) SO, I went to Michaels yesterday and bought some sugar and cream. Bought about 5 little skeins and besides doing Rebecca's recommendation, it was really hard to work the cotton yarn! OMG, was able to do one fairly easily, because it was mainly yo's and knit. But after that one I tried to do another pattern that had a lot of k2tog and s2kp's and k2tbl. Talk about TIGHT!!! I thought that I passed knitting too tight, but any tips on knitting with cotton yarn? And is thread the same way? I was trying out another pattern and I had to p2tbl and I barely could do it! I am not knitting on bamboo, because if I was, I wouldn't have been able to do any of the stitches. I am knitting on KP Options in Wood. Maybe metal is good for cotton thread? I'll post a few pics when I get a chance. I know it's not the place for it, but it is lace and it's sort of a beauty. ;)
Any help/tips going forward would be greatly appreciated!
Have a great weekend all!

Great, Lynn, anxious to see your progress!

Ok, just finished row 21, and just to be safe, I inserted a 'lifeline'. :aww: (I'm not expecting to muck up, but I'd rather have a lifeline and not need it, than not have one and need it.)
Here's my progress...

Oh pretty color Lynn! Can't wait to see the finished product :)
Gino, as Mary said, gotta loosen up with cotton and I've never
tried the Harmonies so I don't know how smooth they are but I
have found metal to be the best for cotton in my experience.
I tend to knit a bit tight as well so I often go up a needle size
when working with cotton.

Lynn great job, looks so pretty
Gino - I find the harmonies better than normal wooden needles but they still grip a little, I would recommend working with the options instead. i have both and I definitely prefer the metal. the harmonies just looked to pretty for me to resist buying them.

Gino,
Cotton and wool are very different from each other. Cotton has no stretch, which means if you normally knit tight, it stays tight. Wool springs back a bit and relaxes when it's blocked so knitting tightly isn't as much of a problem. However, cotton is great for dishcloths so it's worth it. :)
I always use metal needles with cotton. Trying to knit Sugar 'n Cream with bamboo would make me loopy.

Lynn,
Your doily is so pretty! I love that green. I knit my Egeblad blanket in a soft green wool so I'm biased. Keep up the progress photos. :)

Thank you so much, Minou. I actually checked out your blog via the link you posted and your's is spectacular as well! I love that you were so detailed in your images and your descriptions of how you blocked yours. It will help me out tremendously when I get there!
I have a quick question for anyone who can answer....
I'm about to start row 34.
-> 5
(does it mean k5, then put your stitch marker on the 5th st so that becomes the end of the previous row? then start the pattern?)
huh?? can anyone explain this. I know I saw this earlier in this thread, but I don't want to look through a million pages to find it...
Thanks in advance for any help!:muah:
Found it!
Merryknitter,
Thanks and to answer your questions:
Also, I don't understand what ->5 means in row 34...could you explain that to me? You will have a marker at the beginning. When you get to a round that has this, you'll remove the marker, knit the number of stitches it shows, replace the marker, then knit the round. I actually "jogs" the pattern over so that it centers properly as you progress.
I don't mind the questions at all! Get to knittin and enjoy! It's not really a difficult pattern... just has alot of YOs.
lynn893
07-12-2008, 01:19 PM
Another option is to [k1, YO, k1, Yo, k1] into the single yo - this gives a nice smooth edge to the hole.
Can you advise if this worked for the finished product, and what rows was it on?
Thanks!
(PS> I'm going through the entire thread again trying to find an answer to my previous post)

Yeah, I do like the woodens ones better than bamboo now, and I still have a few Addi's (metal) I just like the grip, and I do need to loosen up a little. I knit on the tighter side as well and I think that metal will be a good option!
Thanks for your help and knitting the dishclothes are fun, and you are done in no time. LOL and tinking back 30 stitches? Can do that with my eyes closed. LOLOLOL (not that I made a mistake or anything)

Lynn,
I'm glad my blocking experience will be useful to you! Keep us posted on your progress. My current two blankets are total blobs and look like nothing, so I'll have to wait to take photos. Alas, I have to fly out of town for work tomorrow and they're both too big to take on the plane. I'll have to wait until Wednesday to start knitting them again!

Well, since this piece is working up so quickly, I went out and bought my first addi turbos today - in 40" & 60"!
GOD, they're expensive!!!
I'm used to buying my needles at walmart ($5.97), but couldn't find anything over 29" there, so had to hit the neighbourhood 'knit' shops..... please don't tell my husband! So far, this egeblad has cost me over $80! and I'm sure I'll need to go and buy more cotton fleece for it too! :oo:
But, I'm not really complaining, because those needles will come in handy when I start on all those other beautiful patterns at the kunststrik site! cloud9

Hi Lynn,
Just out of curiosity how expensive are the Addi's in the States?
I have heard a lot of people talk about them being expensive and
I'm curious if they are cheaper over here in Europe :) I was
checking my LYS for something longer than 80 cm for my Egeblad
and noticed at least here in Finland they are between $9-$13
depending on what size you are buying.

in the uk for 40inch circulars up to a 5.5mm addis cost £3.75. I don't know what the exchange rate is but $40 sounds crazy to me. After paying that much you probably have no money left to pay Mary hush money.LOL
I have never tried Addis, I am so hoping you will love them.
lynn893
07-14-2008, 09:07 PM
hehehe, yeah, I'm broke now. I'm really in trouble if I run out of yarn and have to buy more (the yarn cost me $11.99 plus tax per 215 yards!)
BTW, speaking of that.... this question is for those who have finished this project.... how much yarn (in either yards or metres) did you end up using to complete this [please state whether you did the extension or not]
Thanks! :muah:
Edit:
So, about an hour ago, I started row 46. My husband came downstairs to get himself a cold beer, and on his way back upstairs, decided to start telling me something. I pointedly looked at my knitting and then gave him 'the look'. He smirked at me and went on his way.
So, 10 minutes later, I finish row 46..... well not quite. Row 46 ends with a k2, and I only have 1 st on my left needle! arrrgggg!!!
So, I go to the start of the row, and start investigating each st (following the pattern to see where I messed up).... I missed a yo after the 4th repeat at the beginning..... arrrggggg..... husbands! arrrggggg.....
So, I have to unknit the entire row practically (less 4 repeats)....
How come unknitting takes sooooo much longer than knitting? :(
Anyway, I fixed it, and knitted the next row. Now I think I deserve a cold one after that! hehehe.

Lynn, that does sound pretty expensive for the needles! I want
to get some to try as everyone goes on about how great they
are. And sorry about the mess up and have to tink back! I know
how it is though...I have the "I'm knitting and I will kill you if I
mess up" look that DH has finally learned... I'm not sure if it's the
stitch markers hanging from my mouth, the extra needles stuck in
my hair or just the crazed look in my eyes but he did finally catch on!

Especially with patterns that have such detail (as this one does)
At least the kids (9&11) know the 'knitting rule' - if mommy is counting and looking all crazy, do NOT ask any stupid questions.
Important ones, yes.... but NO stupid ones allowed!

OH Mary, that is beautiful!!! It's so "Heartie" LOL How can you do these so fast? GEEEZ. I am taking a break from mine as we speak and starting a scarf for a scarf exchange.
I am trying to find the right pattern to fit the yarn and I have probably done about 10 swatches and frogged them all. I think that I found the right one now, but we'll see.
So, my goal.. is to start the scarf, then once I find the pattern that I like for the exchange, I am doing four rounds on my lace. (two pattern and two knit rounds) But it's taking so long to get around to at least one. (doing my first Niebling and it's a challenge)
I'll send pics when I am done, probably sometime in October... HAHAHAH (jk)
Cheers all...

WOW, that is beautiful, Mary! :inlove: You really do these up fast!
I have a complaint against my brand new addi turbo's.... the 40" long one sounds like nails on a chalkboard everytime the needles hit one another! :hmm: Seriously, I can't knit with these... my eye is twitching just remembering trying to knit one row with that sound! :gah: Well, there's $20 down the toilet (there's a note on the reciept - no returns on needles or patterns) :pout: Any suggestions besides throwing them in the garbage?
DudeWithSticks
07-15-2008, 07:57 PM
OMG Lynn,
That is horrible!!! If you can't take the sound and want to do something with them, post them on here or on Ravelry and see if anyone wants to buy them.
I really like the Harmony by Knit Picks. The cables are better than the addi's and have no memory. There are two different kinds of Knit Picks Needles.
Harmony is the wood (little to no sound)
Options are the metal (don't know about sound)
But Since I used to use bamboo the Harmonies are great and more slick than the bamboo but not as slick as the metal.
Hope that helps, but seriously, try and sell them and then you won't feel so bad when you buy the Knit Picks.
Also if you are doing these with extentions, even the 40's will be too tight. But with the Knit Picks Cables (interchangables) you can get on set of needles and cables run in 24", 32" 40", 47" and even a 60". The 60"s are my lifesavers. So basically you only need one set of needles and and you can buy different size cables for the needles. I actually bought the set and a set of the 60" cables. And the great thing about that is that they send you two sets of cables for 3.99. Take a look at the links that I provided and call them, they are very very helpful and know the merch.
Harmony Wood Interchangeables:

Cables:

Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

That sounds evil! You might ask over in the General Questions forum

not, then you'd probably find someone in the buy/sell/swap forum
who'd buy or swap them! Hope you work it out!

Mary the table cloth looks great, and I agree You are knitting them super fast.
Lynn - Sorry to hear that the Addis are like that. I have never tried them, went straight for the Knit Picks I have both wood and metal. I personally prefer the metal and have no problem with any sounds coming from them. But if you are sensitive to certain sounds then you would probably be better off going with the wood. Mind you the Knit Pick are cheaper than the Addis so might be worth trying to get the size you need in both wood and metal and then see how you like them. I know there are a lot a people that love Addis so would be worth selling them on to get some of that money back.

Libbie :)
Not long... BUT!!! If you'll go back and look at the photo again, you'll see that the outer ring of hearts is denser than the inner ring. A lesson from trial and error... the outer ring actually has too many hearts and wouldn't spread out upon blocking. Therefore, the one I'm working on now will have fewer hearts on that second ring.
Marianne Kinzel actually divides the different patterns into sections so extending hers are quite easy. As long as the total amount of sts on the needle is divisible by the number of sts being worked on a particular section/pattern st line, it will work out.
The first section of hearts had 80 sts, the pattern line had 8 sts to pick up with 2 yos, allowing for 10 hearts. The second section had 240 sts, so I did 30 hearts and it was too many and became evident when I blocked the piece.
My current "Valentine" will have 10 hearts on the first section, 20 on the second and 30 on the third..... I had to change the pattern on 2 lines but it is working out.

LOL! Love the self-bagging thing you've done, Libbie! The blue is gorgeous, really shows the design well.
Those needles should be there this week! I have a question about the needles, too... Wonder why there are two cables? I put my Hemlock on them last night and did a couple of rounds...very smooth and the blanket slid nicely on that thin cable.

Thanks to all the praise for my Mom's start on 'yo' knitting!
She's been knitting for quite a few years, but usually only does blankets (plain blankets since her chemo) I think she just gets flustered easily when there's too much going on in a pattern.
But, I've been pushing her to tackle other stuff... (been pushing toys on her as well!) hehehe
Libbie, your's looks fantastic! I love the color! I think I'm very close to where you are in this work (I'm on row 62). It's not working up as fast now, so I'll wait a week before posting another image of my progress. :teehee:

07-22-2008, 02:30 AM
I'm on Row 62 second time around (after Mary's extension rounds)
hehe good guess Lynn! :)
Can't wait to try the Options needle as I've heard so much about
them! I wonder if there are two cables so if you need the same
size needle for another project you can just switch the tips
between projects and use the cord as a stitch holder? I don't know...
I tend not to have many wip's at a time as I'm a bit obsessive about
finishing something before starting something new. I have two
blankets on the needles right now, the Egeblad and a baby blanket
and I'm really wanting to finish them both so I can start my dd's
sweater and a CPH viking version for myself! :) Then only problem
I see in liking the Options is it will mean needing to buy a kit
for myself....hehe oh well, Christmas is coming! :)

Karina
07-22-2008, 02:37 AM
Libbie - I was going to buy the complete Options set, but when i worked out the price I found that I actually would save myself £10 by buying the needle tips and cables separately. I do prefer the Metal rather that the wood. have both because the wood is just so pretty to look at. You can check it out on Getknitted.com. I am sure they would send outside of the UK. I have always had excellent service from them.

Thanks for the tip I'll go check out that website. I figure I'd be happier
just getting the exchange tips in the sizes I use most often. That
has been one drawback for me in the kit that there are sizes that I
will probably never use...now if they ever offer a build your own
kit so you can customize which needles go in then I'd definitely go
for that hehe

THat is beautiful mary. The hearts show up more on this one than the first. did you extend it? it seems bigger.
mwhite
07-22-2008, 05:51 PM
Yes, remember I posted earlier regarding the white one that the second round of hearts was too full. I took this one, figured that since the first round had 10, needed the second one to have 20 and the third round has 30. The second round on my white one has 30, way too many. I've also figured out that I can extend it further, if desired to have 45 hearts on the fourth and 60 hearts on the fifth...in case I need to for a larger table or whatever. I am so tickled with it...can't you tell? LOL!

I have a stupid question.
After I block this, I'm thinking (if it fits) to use it on my diningroom table. The wash instructions on the lable of the yarn I'm using state hand wash, roll gently in towel, lay flat to dry (Cotton Fleece - 80%cotton/20%merino wool).
Will I have to block it again every time I wash it???????
mwhite
07-25-2008, 12:42 PM
Hmmmm, good question... with the cotton content maybe but if you'll medium starch it when you block, it may last a couple of washes before you'll have to... I would say do a light blocking, by hand whenever you wash like you would any cotton garment.... I would NOT put it in a dryer and be sure to wash it on a gentle cycle with light aggitation.

I am about 50 rows into my first lace project, the Queen Anne's Lace. I am getting addicted to lace, and have almost abandoned socks.

I've just finished row 75 and was about to start row 76, when this stumped me.
I have a question.... regarding: kbl1
now, I know it means knit in the back of the loop (when you do this, your right needle goes into the back of the loop on the left needle).
but here's my question,
Is the right needle supposed to go into that stitch normally as to knit (making an 'x' with the needles) or is the right needle supposed to be turned around to face the same way the left needle is facing and go into the stitch that way???????
mwhite
07-26-2008, 10:03 PM
Make an X with the two needles.
lynn893

thank you Mary.
I also posted my question in the knitting question area, as I wasn't sure if anyone doing our egeblad would be on tonight!
Yippee, I can continue row 76!

Next question...
(I hope I don't get into trouble for double posting here) :aww:
I'm about to work row 83 on my Egeblad (it would have been a knit row except for the (yo) 5 times).
[*k, except for the 5 yo: k1, p1, k1, p1, k1*]
I remember reading some tip regarding doing this differently so it makes a better 'hole'
Does anyone remember?
mwhite
07-28-2008, 02:16 PM
MMario made the suggestion to k1,yo,k1,yo,k1. It does smooth out the hole.

This will be my last question regarding the Egeblad...
Can anyone point me towards a quick tutorial on the finishing off of this? (with reference to the sts that I'm supposed to be doing)
K1 st onto RN and then finish off with a crochet hook.
*3 sts tog with dc/sc, 8 chain; rep * across.
This might as well be German! hehehe!
I"m thinking the k1 is supposed to stay on the crotchet needle until the very end? So it can be used to finish off?
Then is it:
*push crochet hook through 3 sts, yo, pull crotchet hook through all 3, then chain 8.
repeat...
Then how do I end it using the very first k1 st that's been sitting on my crotchet hook?
Thank you so much for all your help, and I absolutely loved working on this project!
mwhite

That stitch is used to start your bindoff and is replaced everytime you end your chain 8...then, at the end, you'll have it at the end of your last ch8 and push the hook through the part at which you began...which is now the end, yo, pull through, cut the yarn about 6-8" from that stitch, pulling through all the way!~ LOLOL! Now, I just proofed this and I think I confused myself! Clear as mud, huh???

ummmm...
ok..... k1.
using crotchet hook, 3 sts tog, yo, pull crotchet hook through all. Chain 8.
From the last loop after the chain 8, do you go straight to the 3 tog again, or do you k1 again?
sorry, Mary, your clear as mud as messed me up.
:roflhard:

Yep, that last loop from the next chain 8 stays on the hook for you to pull your YO through! You got it!

Libbie :)Thank you, Libbie. I really enjoyed this project! It was my first lace work - and I can't believe that it wasn't harder than it was.... considering when you look at it, it looks like it must have taken months and tons of hard work, it actually worked up pretty fast (as least until about row 50, that is) :teehee:
Anyway, my grapevine sweater is in hibernation.... I can hear it calling to me.... lynn.... lynnnnnn.... over here......... hehehe, but I completely understand the 'too hot to work on THAT project' mentality!
I have to go to romni to see if they have pins and then I can block mine.... I'll post an image when completely finished.
(I also have to check out minou's blocking thread again, just to refresh it in my mind!)

Hi all,
Been away and knitting a few other projects before I get to another lace project. But working on a Neibling as well, and have about 30 more rounds to go. I hope I have enough yarn.
I'll post as soon as I am done!
Be well all and stay out cool.

I finished another blanket and it's blocking today. It's nowhere near as complex as Kometenstern, but I love how delicate and simple it is. If this pattern were ever readily available, it would be a great one for beginners to these blankets. As it is, you need to sell your soul on eBay to get the magazine since it's also full of Niebling designs.

You've been busy, Minou! :yay: Those are stunning! AND, I love the colors! I always thought this type of work should be done in neutrals, but not anymore! Now, looking through my stash to start the Hemlock, I'm looking at all my colored yarns as well! :knitting:
I still have NOT blocked my Egeblad (or the Spiralen I finished as well), but I will post pics when I do! I promise. :teehee:

This blanket, Kometenstern and Alita were all made as gifts. I asked my friends what color made them the happiest and then bought the yarn that matched their favorite color. I don't think Kometenstern would have looked as good in a lighter color, so there was a little picking and choosing when it came to the patterns, but it all worked out in the end. I'm really happy with all three of them and can't wait to gift them. I'm moving in less than two weeks and these are reverse going away presents for my three closest friends here.
It seems like I've been busy, but these took me ages! I started Kometenstern in early JUNE and the pink blanket in late June. I diverted off into BSJ's again for a while there. If I weren't moving so soon, they'd probably still be hibernating somewhere. :)
Now that it's getting cooler, I'm getting the urge to knit more again!

Looks great Libbie even before blocking. what weight yarn did you use and needle size. Just trying to get an idea. would like to make my in-laws a blanket for Christmas using the cascade Eco that I got. so am wondering it it would be big enough to be a blanket. would like it to be at least 5 ft across.
Did start the Alita for them but I think they would like the more intricate pattern of the Egeblad, Might make the Alita for my Brother.

Karina, according to Ravelry the yarn I used is aran weight but I've
never believed it haha It seems thinner than that to me but I guess
yarn weights are a bit hard to pin down exactly. The ball band
suggests size 4mm needles to get 18 sts/ 4". I used size 5 mm
needles because I wanted it to still be quite dense. I think I could
have easily used the next size or two up and still had a nice definition
between the solid bits and the lacy bits. Hopefully I'll be doing some
blocking soon and can let you know how large it blocks out to. It
definitely has a lot of stretch to it!
Mary, I love that you made the extension rounds! It made this
pattern be definitely translateable into a lap blanket. After my
sister in law saw the pics she is wanting me to make a couple in
pink for her two little girls so I'll definitely be using those
extensions again!
I kinda stalled out on this project when the summer heat hit and
just could not knit with a wooly blanket on my lap haha Then when
the weather cooled and I dug it back out, I had sort of lost the
"rhythm" and had a hard time facing those millions of stitches! :)
I look forward to doing some more now that the weather is cool
and there won't be any need for long breaks so that I lose
motivation!
Libbie :)

Hey All,
Need to start another blankie... I am almost finished with my lace blanket and ran out of yarn... Should be here on Tuesday!!! I'll post when I get them. It's from a book that Rebecca turned me on to. And believe me it's really really really hard and a challenge.
Been on other projects and work work work. So haven't been here in a bit. All of your projects look so great!
And Mary, I did the extentions too, so your hard work was not wasted!!!
Everyone loves that over the hemlock, but I think that I will always favor the hemlock pattern cause I guess it was my first lace bit project!!!
See you all soon!

Where is everyone??? :) Hope everyone is well!!! Here is a few pic of one of the lace patterns that I just completed!
It was one of the hardest challenges that I have ever done... EVER!
Anyway, here's a pic of the finished throw and also a few links to see it in full size. It turned out to be about 5.5 feet. Used Eco Wool in colorway 8049 "Tarnish"
It's from a book from Lacis...

It's pattern #5 and it's a hexagonal floral motif. There are a few different names that they are calling it.
Glockenblume and La Promenade dans la Foret
Took about 3.5 hanks about 1600 yds.
Now onto another lace project! What to do next?
Come on peeps, the weather is getting colder!

Thanks Karina...
I purchased the book from www.lacis.com (http://www.lacis.com). It's quite an expensive book, but they have some of the most beautiful Herbert Neibling patterns in there.
Knitted Lace Designs of The Modern Mode, Book 1 (Kazuko Ichida)
Most all of the patterns are Neiblings, some are original and some have been altered slightly, meaning a different trim has been added or removed etc. But the ladies at Lacis told me that they are Neibling patterns.
