No, they slant in opposite directions.

Actually, they DO slant in the same direction. If you don't like to do ssk, you can do k2tog tbl. It's k2tog and ssk that are opposite.

Ah. I should have read more carefully. My brain (let's blame it on new glasses) was thinking of knitting 2 together. Sorry!

They slant the same way, but k2tog tbl twists the stitches where they lie flat in SSK.

Thanks! I'm still not very good at SSK so it's nice to know I have an option.

You could try slip 1, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over; it's essentially the same as SSK, and I do both pretty much interchangeably.

I like SSK and I don't mind K2tog tbl, just confirming what had seen somewhere.

they are not the same.. but they both produce (if you knit Western European style) decreases with identical slants.

There a a half dozen or so ways to make left leaning decreases.

and generally speaking, while not identical, one can be subbed for another..the differences are subtle. (and if you don't mind, or if you prefer --for what ever reason--one style more than another, go right ahead and substitute one for another.

I read in Artic Lace (http://www.sheeptoshawl.com/arcticlace.html) that they taught the Inuit women to k2tog tbl instead of ssk because it was faster and one fluid motion like k2tog instead of several steps. I've been meaning to try it but I keep forgetting . . .

I am the same way I always forget I just read the pattern and do as it says.
