View Full Version : What is Plurking?

06-18-2008, 05:26 PM
I keep reading different blogs about Plurking (http://www.plurk.com/main) and I go and check it out and I still do not understand it! One blog I was reading (http://akamaiknitter.com/), she says it is a bigger time suck than Raverly?

Anyone here Plurk or know what it is?

Seems like an online diary. Not like blogging in that you don't have to keep up a web page on your own, just use theirs.

Just what I need, another place to spend time on the 'net.

You might also want to look at penzu.com
It's also a diary or log site. Very simple & straightforward.
The home page looks like a regular legal pad.
After you type your entries on it you can save them and either share them with designated people or keep them private.

It is a social networking site like Twitter. I understand that Plurk is better with threaded conversations (somewhat like Pownce i suppose.) I personally don't like it, but I am mostly a die hard twitter girl.

I suppose it IS more of a time suck than ravelry, but ravelry is amost not at all a time suck for me unless i am actually looking for something. I twitter all the time and have made some great friends from all over the world on there. Some I have met IRL some not. The great thing with twitter (and sorry I can't speak much on plurk because i have spent almost no time there at all.) is that you can decide who you want to "follow" and even who you want to allow to follow you. If your timeline is public everybody in the world can see it. If it is private then only people you allow to see it can. My list of twitter friends is pretty diverse. (though they are all geeks as far as i am concerned. ;) ) I love that about it.

oooh kay. explain twitter. I once explained twitter to a friend by saying "Imagine that you are walking up to a complete stranger and telling them what is on your mind in 140 characters or less." Twitter is a lot like that. People use it in all sorts of different ways, and for lots of different reasons. I use it a lot like a chat room. And it sort of lines itself up like that. some people use it to micro-blog their day. some people use it as a way to drive people to their regular blogs. some people use it to drive people to their businesses.

Let's see, some of the people on my twitter list...
the CEO of Zappos (who sometimes gives away free shoes! )
NBC Cameraman (who just came back from a trip with the president and filmed Tim Russert's funeral yesterday for the family)
Geologist who works for NASA and her boyfriend and their dog. ;)
Miss Violet and Adminnie (not that odd really as they are local to me too but they also seem to be abandoning twitter for plurk. :) )
an ex-pat living in Bangkok (but I shun him... heh)
A nurse with Doctors without borders (i try not to think about him too much because he goes far too many places where he has to duck when getting off the airplane to avoid flying bullets)
High School music teacher
Stay at home moms
Lots of IT -techy type people

That's just a few. I have 160-ish people on my list. Some people have over 1000. I just can't follow a long or even pretend to if I have more than 200 so I trim my list pretty regularly. I thought it was a ridiculous program when I first started using it. I now have more than 28k updates in a little over a year's time. :)

Silver, I am trying to add you to my Plurk but I am at a total loss, do you know how to do it? BTW I am also figaro over there too!

I see you got it figured out, but for anyone else, you can find anyone's profile by going to your own, and in the address bar of your browser, replacing your username with theirs.

I'm Niki_39 on Plurk. I commented on your page, Silver, but I figured you'd have no clue who Niki_39 was since I'm Ronda everywhere else. :)

Ronda, I hope you don't mind but I added you as a friend, still trying to get the hang of the whole Plurk thing but I think I like it.

Just so everyone knows, anyone can feel free to add me (http://www.plurk.com/user/ComeToSilver), and I'll add you too. It's really more and more fun with the more friends you have!

Agree! Anyone can add me as well. And while we are all at it, we need to gang up on figaro and whip her with a wet noodle for getting us all hooked on it!!!

Alls I did was ask a innocent little question?:flirt:

06-21-2008, 02:09 PM
I don't know if I should kiss her or beat her with a wet noodle. I love Plurk, but it's very addicting. I suppose it's because it's all new, and will wear off a bit? Maybe??

I had never heard of this but checked it out and signed up. But I don't know anyone on it.

Silver posted some instructions on how to find us in post 11 above, then add us as your friends!
