A few months back I asked about things to do in Northern California.
Well now my trip is just around the corner and we are planning to leave next week. Except now there are fires all around N. CA. There is smoke in Redding --planning to stop there over night. And Smoke in Sacramento- planning 3 nights there.

So what IS it like there right now. I'm hoping to be there next week. (That is if my car is out of the shop which is another huge problem).

I'm in southern CA, but having been through fires and seeing this graphic.. you will encounter smoke and probably close roads in the fire areas.

The best thing to do is figure out where you are staying and the roads needed to get there and figure out the best way to go or alter if necessary. Calling the places you are staying is a good idea to find out what is going on as well. Things can change overnight though, too.

It appears after zooming in that Sacramento isn't too closely involved, but it's hard to tell.

I live east of Sacramento, near the foothills, and the smoke has been very bad for the past week. It's not pleasant to be outdoors, the air is filthy and the sunlight is all kinds of strange colors.

Now, we're being told that by this weekend (6/28-29) we may develop enough air movement in the upper atmosphere to help clear out the smoke. Then again, there are so many fires in so many places that I think it's tough to predict what the actual smoke situation may be.

Other than the smoke, the weather's been pretty nice (if that's any comfort at all). I do hope all this doesn't screw up your vac plans; I know you've been planning it a long time. And I have to say for the sake of everyone living here I really hope it clears up soon. It's unhealthy and just plain awful.

ETA: Sacramento itself continues to be very smoky (or "hazy" as the pert weather gal says) today, Friday. It's not looking too good, sorry.

I'm so glad I read this post. DH and the kids and I are planning a trip to San Fran on the 4th. I wanted to head down to Monterey but now we may have to rethink that part of the visit.

We have pretty much decided to alter our plans. I'm pretty disappointed, I have reservations and the like made already which I will have to cancel. But we still have the time off so we are doing some southern Oregon things. Wild Life Safari and the Oregon Vortex. We are still going to go to the Trees of Mystery in Klamath. I need to see some of the Red Woods having never seen them before. I wanted to see the Ave of the Giants but there are too many surrounding fires.
The air would be miserable and limit out door things and not good for my daughter with asthma or my son with the cardiac condition. I was looking forward to visiting some things in Sacramento too. Oh well.

My mom lives up by the Bull Creek Fire and she just told me that all roads out of her area (96, 299, and 101) are all closed to all traffic. In the early mornings (5am) the sky is clear then she can almost watch the smoke come in. She is supposed to come out here next Tuesday via JetBlue out of the Sacramento airport, to do this she will need to drive past maybe 7 fires.

I hope they contain them soon...Crossed Fingers
