I have 5 lbs of wonderful smelling strawberries and we are having a few couples out to the house for a cookout this afternoon...do I make shortcake (pound cake, berries, cream) or do I make a pie? I want shortcake and the hubby says more people like pie....Don't want to make both b/c then there are too many leftovers.

Shortcake!

If you put it out as a "make your own", people can have just berries or with all the fixings.

Pie is just pie

I love pie but if you are doing most of the food prep yourself, make it easy and do the shortcake. I think plenty of people love shortcake and I prefer strawberries on shortcake. When I think of pie, I think of blueberries or apples.

Have fun!

Love both but I would say go with shortcake.

It depends on which is better, your homemade pastry or your shortcake (which I'm assuming is from a box, my niece is the only one I know who makes cake from scratch).

I'm very into pies if they're homemade (and good) and since I don't make it, strawberry pie would be special.

Shortcake, please, with lots of whipped cream too. Strawberry shortcake spells the Fourth of July to me..... Have fun.....

Looks like shortcake is winning....and it is easier than rolling out pie dough and making a lattice top.

Mike - add me to your list of people that bake from scratch. Believe it or not I do not use box mixes for anything. I do cake, brownies, pie crusts, pancakes, waffles, biscuits etc all from scratch. Even pizza dough

I just poke slits into the top (cherry and apple) or no top crust for Shoo-Fly.

Homemade shortcake vs homemade pastry would be a toss up for me. I'd be happy either way. :)

I am much more of a pie person... But whatever you think sounds good than go for it!

Definitely shortcake! That way everyone can have their own ratio of cake to strawberry, not to mention the best part the whipped cream.

Mike- you can add me too to the list of from scratch bakers. The only problem here is even with AC it is too hot to bake in the summer.

I vote for shortcake as well. Count me as a scratch baker including all our sandwich bread.

Shortcake here too! Pie is great, but it just seems so heavy for summertime. And this way everyone can fix their dessert the way they like it. Oh great, now I'm really craving something sweet!

What did you decide to make?

Much to my hubby's dismay I ended up making shortcake. I told him I was going to make pie (not really) until he decided he wanted me to make potato salad at the last minute and then I didn't have time. The pound cake came out great and everyone seemed to really like making their own dessert. There weren't any leftovers so maybe today I'll make him a pie.

Thanks for your help !!
