I just found this on the Web...

Hurdle Stitch

Cast on an even number of stitches.

Row 1: K every stitch across the row.
Row 2: K every stitch across the row.
Row 3: K1, P1, across the row.
Row 4: K1, P1, across the row.

4 Rows = a pattern.

I've been looking but can't seem to find the pattern for Furrow Rib Stitch and Hurdle Stitch. They were both used on the preemie blanket I just finished knitting and I really like them. Could someone leave a pointer to them for me please? I would really love to give them a try.

Thanks so much,
MGM

Looks like gmmarton got it for you too - and I replied to your pm - you should have a double dose of hurdle stitch! Thanks gmmarton!

I'm done with Preemie Pastel rainbow and it's ready to go to Spikey. I figured since all the colors of the rainbow combine to make white... I should do the border in white. I used this pattern (""http://crochet.about.com/od/easy/a/easyshelledging.htm) (after doing a single crochet all around). I'm satisfied with it, but I do need more practice.

Love love love the soft colors and all garter stitch on the Preemie Pastel Rainbow! The white border is just perfect for it. And you did a very nice job on the lacy scallops, Steve! It's beautiful!

I just received Pumpkin Delight in the mail today, so that's in line behind Tutti Frutti which is almost finished, and Cherry Berry for which I already have the yarn.

I'll post pictures of Tutti Frutti in the next day or two. Just have to finish the border and work up a little tutorial on it for my website.

Is it ok if I hang onto it and mail it with Cherry Berry once I finish it? They are both preemies. I also have Pumpkin Delight but that is worsted. Does it go to someone else?

Anyway, here is Tutti Frutti...so far it's my favorite! I'll be posting a tutorial on the crocheted scallop border on my website soon in case anyone is interested in using it.

Our Northeast Oddball Baby and Preemie Blanket project has been going like gangbusters since we hit the ground running last summer. :woohoo:

To date, we have finished 14 worsted weight blankets and 7 preemie blankets, with another 18 worsted weight and 21 preemie in progress!! :knitting::guyknitting:

I couldn’t be happier with what we have accomplished, and continue to do on a daily basis! As the project has grown, however, it has become too time-consuming for one person to manage the blanket-tracking, knitter-notifying, new blanket-starting, blanket-knitting, and blog-updating.

Since gmmarton has done such a fabulous job in delivering the worsted weight blankets, as well as starting so many of our new blankets, recruiting knitters, and responding to posts when I am away, it seemed a perfect fit to have her take over the coordination of the worsted weight project, while I’ll drop back to only coordinating the preemie blankets. I will continue to keep all of the blogs updated, as best I can.

We will still keep all of the blankets in one thread (on KH and Rav), but please direct any PMs regarding worsted weight blankets to gmmarton, and preemie blankets to me.

We also wanted to take this opportunity, especially since we have so many super new group members,:grphug: to remind everyone of how we can get the best quality blankets in a reasonable period of time:

1. Please. please, please READ the instruction sheet that comes with the blankets, and follow the instructions. It tells you how many stitches the blanket should have – and COUNT before you start. We’ve had a bit of a problem with blankets growing wider as they get longer. If the previous knitter(s) added a stitch or two, just do some decreases in the middle to get back to the correct number.

2. Please make sure that the last row of your section is a wrong side row that is only knit stitches. This will allow the next knitter to join the yarn and start on the right side.

3. There are some new yarns out there that are not the weight they seem to be, which has confused quite a few people. That crazy Vanna White makes some interesting colors, but her yarns are heavier than they seem. The Vanna’s Choice Baby is a worsted weight (medium/4) yarn but comes in more baby-type colors and was put with the DK/Sportweight baby yarn section at my local Michaels. This is too thick to use with our preemie blankets, so please be on the lookout.

When in doubt, read the tips and instructions sticky (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79558) at the top of the KH Charity Knitting section.

4. Please only send a blanket along once you know that the recipient is ready. I try to keep the lists on the blogs up to date, so feel free to contact the next knitter directly (letting gmmarton or me know, too), but wait for confirmation before mailing. We don’t want anyone getting overloaded or any more of our blankets going MIA!

Thanks again to all of you for all of your time and effort! We love working with you! :muah:

I received NorthEast Rainbow II today from threesmom - thanks for the yarn, Beth! This blanket, knit entirely in the garter stitch, has a specific color scheme, so I will list it here for the benefit of all knitters:

Red - (completed by MGM)
Orange - (completed by threesmom)
Yellow - to be completed by gmmarton
Green - to be completed by robkat317
Blue - to be completed by kidpal51
Purple - to be completed by bobi1218

Border - to be completed by gmmarton

I hope this list helps our last three knitters. I, personally, love the Rainbow blankets. They are so colorful and cheery. We have already started NE Rainbow I, but it is currently Missing in Action (how sad is that??).

I'm sure NE Rainbow II will be just as beautiful, so special thanks to those volunteering to get this blanket completed once and for all! I really appreciate it.

Missyjoon, I will be mailing out a ton of blankets to you next week! Well, not a ton, really...probably just the four new worsted weight blankets I've started, including: Hues of Blues,
Vanilla Creme, Creamsicle and
The Big Apple. I'm a little ahead of my schedule, so I hope you don't mind.

We have quite a few new folks who have joined our Oddball Charity group in recent weeks, and I know they are anxious to get involved and help us complete our worsted weight and preemie baby blankets.

The stitch is called Farrow Rib, not Furrow Rib. It is a two-row pattern:

Row 1: K2, P1 across.
Row 2: P1, K2 across.

Of course, if you are using it on our Oddball baby blankets, you would begin with K3 and end with K3 on every row to create a border.

Sorry, I never heard of the Hurdle Stitch, but I bet you can find it on the Web.

I discovered that this pattern is missing something...It should be knit on a multiple of 3 stitches plus 1.

Row 1 should be (K2,P1) to last stitch, K1
Row 2 should be P1, (K2,P1) across

I did the last section of Pumpkin Delight without that last K1 on row 1 and without the first P1 on Row 2. It came out more like an odd seed stitch pattern. I guess we could call it Not Quite Farrow Rib!

Anyway, I just thought I'd clarify that in case anyone else wants to work that pattern stitch. Now I'm going to get started on Cotton Candy.....oooooh it's so pretty!

That's ok Gail. It turned out interesting anyway! The section right before it was done in seed stitch. Mine looks similar, except for every third stitch is a little offset.

I am using the real Farrow Rib on Cotton Candy and it looks nice.

Mellow Yellow and Mint Chocolate Chip are finally ready to move on!

The first section of Mellow Yellow was done with Bernat Softee Baby in alternating stockinette and garter stitch. The second section was done with Bernat Baby Jacquard (Lemon Pie) in Farrow Row Rib.

MCC was done with Bernat Softee Baby in Loop Stitch - and has been the bane of my existence. Knit, frog, knit, frog :knitting::frog::knitting::frog:

They'll go out to the next knitters tomorrow.

mdc550 posted this over on our Ravelry thread:

"Hello, all! I’ve had the urge to start a new preemie blanket which I would like to call Spearmint Candy because (1) that is the name of the Bernat Baby Jacquard yarn that I used; and (2) I don’t have a creative bone in my body! But, nonetheless, the beginning colors are charming: shades of bubblegum pink, grass green, lemon yellow and white (notice no mention of “mint”!??! :teehee:). Spikey will be next in line (as she has the circs and the instruction template), but the remaining four sections are up for grabs. So, if these lovely spring colors are appealing, please let Spikey know and she will add you to the spreadsheet."

Anyone interested? We need three more knitters and border guard. Thanks! :muah:

Here are three new preemie blankets that are being started soon:

Grape Jelly :yay:- purples, greens, browns

Confetti :balloons: - fun colors, with dots if possible. I have a terrific yarn from Plymouth, called Dreambaby (50% acrylic, 50% nylon, which should be ok) that is a light green color with little blue and green dots, DK weight and feels super soft. I’ll see how it knits up, as I’ve never used it before.

Starlight  - whites, yellows, blues

Who’s interested?

I received Citrus Sunshine in today's mail along with the most darling little fleece flower pin! Thank you so much pt! How very thoughtful. I only wish the blanket had brought a little warmth along with the sunshine! But at least we know there will be a few more warm babies out there!

Cotton Candy is almost done, so I'll save it until I finish Citrus Sunshine and mail them both back together.

Here's the completed Cotton Candy. I finally got Farrow Rib right! That's a pretty stitch. I worked it in soft lilac...I've seen purple cotton candy before  ! And the border is another one I made up using Bernat Softee Baby Pink Marl. I'll have the pattern and some close up pictures on my website soon.

Well, it is that time of year again, when I can bask in the thought of having a week off very soon. And to celebrate the joy of having some free time, I will be starting some more worsted weight Oddball Baby Blankets. They include:

Leprechaun - done in various shades of green in honor of You-Know-Who!

It's a Boy - dare I say 'boy colors' and not freak anyone out?

It's a Girl - one for the girls!

Spring Fling - soft colors/pastels in honor of the change of season next month!

If you are interested, please post here or send me a PM.

Thanks everyone for the overwhelming support.

I'll put it in the mail along with Cotton Candy tomorrow (Friday 2/13) to Spikey.

I would be very interested to know what stitch was used in the first section of Citrus Sunshine. It looks like the yarn is carried over two or three stitches all across the rows. That particular yarn is very pretty and also felt really nice.

Also the stitch used in the orange section was fun. Would love to know the name of that or get the pattern for it.

Thanks,

Hi, MGM! I used Loop Stitch for the first section on Citrus Sunshine.

Super easy, and works for any even numbered pattern.

Row 1 (RS): Knit
Row 2: *K1, slip 1* K last 2
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: K2 *slip 1, K1*

Just remember that the pattern is worked on the wrong side to show up on the right side. (I usually screw that up when I'm tired) :sleepy:

Attention all Northeast Oddball Groupies:

I just confirmed an appointment to meet with Bridgeport Hospital's Child Life Therapist this Friday morning to drop off our completed worsted weight baby blankets. I told her that we had another twelve (12) blankets for delivery, and I honestly thought she was going to cry. Her enthusiasm for our blankets is overwhelming, to say the least. She mentioned that the pediatric staff members couldn't stop touching the last batch of blankets delivered last Thanksgiving - they felt so soft!

The staff also loved the fact that we named the blankets. I told her that some of the blankets coming this time had names like "Pumpkin Delight," "Think Pink," "Bubblegum," "Independence Day," "Nor'easter," etc.

My Bpt. Hospital contact also reiterated the gratefulness that the new parents felt when the hospital passed out our blankets.

It is so heartwarming to know that our blankets are making such a profound difference in people's lives.

Thank you dear past, present, and future knitters and crochet folks, for your generous contributions to babies and their family members in the greater Bridgeport, Connecticut region. You have all done so much to enliven the Bliss!

I just wanted everyone to know that with the overwhelming success of our Northeast Oddball Baby Blankets project, I feel inspired to start up an additional three blankets. At present, we have sixteen worsted weight blankets in circulation. In addition, Northeast Rainbow II is complete so our total is seventeen. I like to round up my numbers (crazy, isn't it?), so I am looking for an even number like twenty (20) for delivery to Bridgeport Hospital this spring.

These are the worsted weight blankets I will be starting very soon:

Sherbert - 110 sts on size 8's - pastels

Pink Eraser - 110 sts on size 8's - various shades of pink

Dogwood - 110 sts on size 8's - pinks, peach, soft/off white

I'm going with more stitches on these blankets because I think that with all of the time, effort, energy and focus going into them, they should be a substantial size for the little one.

Let me know if you are interested in working on any of these. I probably won't cast on for another week or so, so there is plenty of time for you to sign up.

Many thanks!

Hi Northeasters!!

Sorry to have been MIA. Am on an extended business trip and internet access has been surprisingly difficult to find, to say the least.

Knitting time, however, has been in abundance! When I return on Saturday, I'll be ready to mail out Circus, Circus, Neon Fun, Spearmint Candy, Starlight, Beautiful Boy (I did Tuxedocat's part), and Grape Jelly. Will also likely have enough time to start another preemie blanket, and I've knit two Calorimetrys!

I hope everyone is well, and has been having a good week. I'm currently lunching a cafe on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, where it is sunny and 72 degrees - and loving every minute of it!!!

Well, we are 'springing ahead' this weekend, and I'm feeling energized, even if we're about to lose an hour. Between the snow day, delayed opening, CT Mastery Testing (ugh), cold, wind, and overall lack of sleep this week, I'm feeling something's got to change around here (must be my manic side coming out!). The reality of it is that I just finished a huge project yesterday related to school and now I am crying tears of joy. What a relief! I feel liberated! :woohoo: :woot:

I feel...like starting some more worsted weight blankets, in fact! I feel...like these two blankets are going to be a little bigger than those we've done in the past...five inches per knitter on 110 stitches. These are my thoughts:

Lollipop - knit in any bright colors
Flower Power (as a throwback to my '60's days) - "gardener's choice" for colors

So, if you are interested in working on either of the above, I will probably get them cast on this weekend as I continue to lose sleep and await the arrival of Spring. Please send me a PM and I will add you to the list.

Thanks, everyone, for your support. :muah:

Good morning one and all,

I received a letter yesterday that I wanted to share with you. This is in response to the recent donation of Oddball Baby Blankets to the folks at Bridgeport Hospital.

"Dear Gail and Northeast Oddball Knitters,

On behalf of the staff and patients of the P.T. Barnum Pediatric Center and everyone at Bridgeport Hospital, thank you and all the Oddball Knitters for your generous gifts-in-kind of twelve beautiful hand knitted blankets for our patients.

The blankets are a wonderful addition to th the services provided by Bridgepport Hospital's Pediatric Unit. They will provide the patients such comfort while they receive important medical care. The ability to snuggle up with something soft and warm during their hospital stay helps speed along their recovery.

Spikey, the blankets are beautiful. Eighteen bundles of Bliss! Have fun delivering them tomorrow. Thank you for your guidance. You've been there for us 24/7 from day one.

With the eighteen preemie baby blankets going to CHOP, the last delivery of twelve and the first delivery of eight worsted weight blankets to Bridgeport Hospital, our Northeast Oddball Knitters (and crochet friends) have created thirty-eight blankets since August, 2008.

It is such a joy to be involved with such wonderful people who are so giving of their time, energy and creativity.

Congratulations one and all! :yay: :yay: :yay:

I will most definitely let you know once I am a bit more comfortable and know how to cast off! lol I bought metal needles last night and am having a much easier time of it than the plastic ones I was given at my lesson. Happy Friday all NE Oddball Knitters! I hope that you all have some of this glourious sunshine– even though it’s not exactly warm yet – it is sure sunny!

I am honored to start a new Preemie Oddball Blanket (DK or sport weight yarn), and have choosen the name Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The blanket will consist of bright solid primary colors (Red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange… anything in the rainbow!)

This is truly one of my most favorite songs, and whenever I hear it or think about it, I imagine Kermit sitting there and swinging his legs. Hopefully that image and this song will bring us joy as we create it … and joy to the recipient.

Anyone want to sign up??

Thanks!!

Edited – Maybe it was “It’s not easy being green” where he swings his legs… hopefully you get the point! lol

Just a gentle reminder to our beautiful Oddball Knitters (and Border Patrol crochet friends too!):

I observed something while doing the final preparations of our worsted weight blankets for delivery to Bridgeport Hospital that I want to bring to your attention. Simply put, although these are small items that we are creating with the help of many, I would expect that every single person working on a blanket would do his/her very best work. Everyone working on these blankets has made a commitment to read and follow the guidelines/instructions suggested for that blanket. Off the top of my head, these are some concerns that I saw with the last batch of worsted weight blankets.

1. Make sure you count the stitches on your rows.
2. Examine your work periodically for dropped stitches; if you have dropped a stitch, please pick it up. There are excellent videos out there (check the KnittingHelp.com website) to help you with that issue.
3. Pay attention to the weight of the yarn called for for your blanket. Please, no sportweight or DK weight on the worsted weight blankets (or, no worsted weight yarns should be used on our preemie baby blankets).
4. Finish your last row as an all-knit row on the wrong side of the blanket.
5. It is not necessary to weave in your ends; however, please make sure they are long enough for someone to weave in at a later time.

It is wonderful to let your creativity come out with your stitch pattern of choice; however lacy patterns with lots of holes are not the ideal for these blankets. And speaking of holes, I actually received a finished worsted weight blanket in February with a hole right smack in the middle of the blanket! (Fortunately, I had matching yarn and was able to fix that problem). So please don't be afraid to look your work over carefully and check for anything out of sorts.

Forgive me for sounding harsh; that is not my intention. I just want to make sure we maintain the high quality of work that we are all accustomed to doing as we move forward for the purpose of co-creating our beautiful oddball baby blankets. There are so many little ones out there who need our blankets; let's always give them our Best!

Blissful Blue (various shades of blues)

Tropical Plantation (tropical colors) (a take-off on the ever popular preemie blanket already completed)

April Showers (rainy day colors)

Marshmellow (all white/soft white) (a take-off on Vanilla Creme)

I probably won't start them for at least another ten days. They will be larger in size (110 sts CO; 5 inches per knitter).

Please let me know if you are interested in helping out.

hey everyone!
I just got back from our band trip to disney world, where we marched in a parade through magic kingdom, and I was thinking of some ideas for new blankets.
I don't really have time to start any new blankets, but if anyone wanted to, I came up with some ideas.
for example, what about one called A Whole New World and making it colors of a flying carpet (blues, yellows, reds, purples white)
or, Under The Sea with marine colors (bright pinks, yellows, blues greens)
or, Hakuna Matata (it means no worries. . . the lion king) with the colors of the sunset ( oranges, reds, yellows)
anyways, disney is amazing and it just made me think, what do kids love? disney.

happy knitting!

Great ideas, sarahbean!

I would be happy to start two new worsted weight weight blankets using two of your themes, A Whole New World and Under the Sea.

So, knitting friends, we will create two more worsted weight blankets for our Northeast Oddball Project as follows:

A Whole New World: blues, yellows, reds, purples, whites, etc.

Under the Sea: bright blues, bright greens, bright pinks, bright yellows...bright, bright, bright!

If you are interested, please send me a PM and I will add you to the list.

Thanks, sarahbean, and I'm glad DisneyWorld was fun!

Hello everyone,

I updated our worsted weight Blog yesterday for all interested parties. We have eleven completed worsted weight blankets with two more completed, but not yet received, and another five that are close to completion. If my math is right, that means eighteen more worsted weight blankets for the folks at Bridgeport Hospital's Pediatrics Center. This is truly amazing, as our last delivery was as recent as February, a short nine weeks ago!

We currently have another ten blankets in circulation, three of which need additional knitters. Please check our Blog (http://northeastoddball.blogspot.com/) and note our progress.

Many thanks to all who have helped make our Northeast Regional Group such an overwhelming success!

norepeats, we have worsted weight and preemie blankets in circulation here. Are you in the Northeast? Please send one of us a PM and we will be in touch!

Thanks!

Hi norepeats, and welcome. We are always looking for new knitters and crocheters to join our group!

The DK (preemie) blanket blog has just been updated, so let me know where you might like to jump in (link in my signature).

I hope everybody is well! I haven't been checking in here very much lately. But I just wanted to let you know that I did receive "It's A Boy" a few days back. I'll be starting the last section & border on it this weekend.

Thanks, and welcome to the Northeast Regional Knitting Groups. We are quite an active group of knitters. Our worsted weight baby blankets have been going to Bridgeport Hospital's Pediatrics Center and our preemie baby blankets have been going to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). I coordinate the worsted weight blankets and Spikey coordinates the preemies.

We will be knitting throughout the summer months, so if you want to participate, let us know.

Check out the instructions/FAQs stickies at the top of the Charity Knitting page, that will explain all.

Then look at our blogs (links in my sig) to see where knitters are needed and let us know where you'd like to fit in.

There are circulating blankets that have openings, and new ones starting pretty regularly, just depends on what colors and weights of yarn that you have (or would like to buy).
