I received a lovely letter yesterday. Thanks to all of you, we are getting quite a reputation at the hospital at Bridgeport Hospital.

"Thank you and all the members of the Northeast Regional Group for your recent donation of 14 hand-knitted baby blankets for our P.T. Barnum Pediatric Center. As you know our young patients and their parents truly appreciate them. Rest assured that the children definitely feel the "love and good wishes" of the talented individuals who make these beautiful gifts possible."

"Please thank all of your fellow knitters for continuing to think of our littlest patients and thank you for taking the time to send them to us. We deeply appreciate your generosity."

"Best wishes to all involved for a very happy and healthy summer."

Sincerely,

Susan M. Chudwick, CFRE

The DK Blanket Blog (http://northeastpreemie.blogspot.com) has been updated, so folks can check on next-knitters easily while I'm away next week.

One new blanket is open for volunteers. Junebug, will be done in fun summer colors. I've already finished the first section, so it can be sent out to the second knitter when I get back towards the end of next week.

Who's interested? :knitting:

You're very welcome! I wouldn't mind posting it on Ravelry, except that I don't know how to and I haven't taken the time to figure Ravelry out :??

You can probably tell that by my page...not very busy! So if you point me in the right direction, I'm happy to do it. Or if you can take the picture and do it, that's great too.

I really must spend some time figuring it out so I can share all my stuff on there too. Someday!

Happy Anniversary, Northeast Oddball Knitting Group!!!

One year ago today, our Northeast regional group officially started, although some of us had secretly been working on the first few blankets before our official start date.

I want to thank each and every one of you for making our project the overwhelming success that it has become! Your time, effort, and expense are greatly appreciated by our blanket recipients, as well as your fellow knitters and crocheters.

Special thanks to gmmarton, who stepped up and took over the worsted weight blankets when it became too much for me to organize both the WW & DK weight blankets. She has been such a terrific supporter of our project from the beginning and we would not be as successful as we are today without her.

Looking forward to a great second year working with all of you!

Thank you, Spikey, for the kind words. Your organizing power has really kept us all "together" this past year.

It is rather amazing to me that we've reached our First Anniversary as the Northeast Regional Knitting Group. We are stronger than ever! I did a little checking when I woke up early today and wanted to share these facts about our last year of knitting.

32: The number of completed preemie Oddball Baby Blankets delivered to CHOP, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

14: Preemie Oddball Baby Blankets currently in circulation (or on the needles).

32: The number of completed worsted weight Oddball Baby Blankets delivered to the Pediatrics Unit of Bridgeport Hospital, Bridgeport, CT.

8: The number of recently completed worsted weight Oddball Baby Blankets ready for delivery the first week of August 2009.

10: Worsted weight Oddball Baby Blankets currently in circulation (or on the needles).

35: The number of participants who have volunteered to create our beautiful baby blankets.

Members of our Northeast Regional Group of Oddball Knitters have had some major, life-altering challenges this past year, including (un)employment, housing, health, caregiving an elder, and dealing with the stress of having a loved one in harm's way (Iraq or Afghanistan). Through it all you have done your best to honor your commitment as an 'Oddball' knitter. That commitment is truly appreciated.

Good fortune to all of you, always...

We are at 49 and counting up! That's right, everyone - we've started 49 worsted weight baby blankets since we began in August 2008 and 38 have already been delivered to the Pediatrics Unit at Bridgeport Hospital, Bridgeport, CT. Another worsted weight blanket was washed and photographed yesterday - A Whole New World is now in the completed pile. Simply put, 39 out of 49 blankets are done!

So, I'd like to initiate blanket #50, Fruity Pebbles. Suggested colors are white, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink. This blanket will be 5" per knitter and worked on 109 stitches.

I bring the laptop down and set it up so I can work on my website, and I have all my 'stuff' and other ongoing projects down here which you can see on my website. But where I do my relaxing knitting, which is what the oddball blankets are for me, is up in the family room and much too warm to have a blanket sitting on my lap! We do live on top of a hill though, and we have lots of windows and ceiling fans, so the evenings tend to be more comfortable. Just not comfortable enough to have a pile of yarn on my lap!

This too shall pass, and soon enough we will all be begging for heavy afghans well underway to keep us warm!

It's all good and I'm thankful for all of it!

Take care,
MGM

Good news! We have received "lovely!"

Bad news! In a fit of enthusiasm (and also in an effort to finish early so my daughter can have a little extra time on her part of it) I started on it. I was using a Baby Bruswick yarn, and it turned out to be way too thin. (The gauge on the band is 32 sts/4" on #3 needles.) I did four rows of this pattern (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/doublelattice.htm) and it looked like lace. I already frogged it & will try again tomorrow.

I received this PM from Shandeh, the originator of the Oddball Blankets Project, who gave me permission to share it with the group. The Thank You note is about a worsted weight blanket called Dogwood. It was knit by gmmarton, missyjoon, robkat317, knitterluvspurls, bobi1218 and knittinginhudson.

Thank you message from blanket recipient

Hi Gail!

We just got this message in the moderator’s forum email box. Thought you would like to see it. Feel free to share the message with your group. Shandeh

Dear Gail M., Melissa K., Kathy A., Robin P., Robyn P., and Brenda L.:

My two month old daughter just spent three days at the PICU at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, CT. It was a very frightening time for me and my husband. We are happy to report that she is home and doing well.

What a nice and beautiful surprise to have a home made worsted weight blank delivered to us! It really lifted my spirits to see such a beautiful piece in such a drab and sterile hospital room. I can’t wait to tell my daughter the story of how the beautiful blanket came to be hers. It currently adorns the crib in her room at home.
I just wanted to formally thank you for the wonderful work you do. It was greatly appreciated by these nervous parents!

Laura and Rich

It is so nice to really see that we are making a difference with our Oddball Baby Blankets, one family at a time.

Congratulations, all!

What a nice note! :grphug:

I need some advice.

This pattern I'm trying to use (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/doublelattice.htm) is turning out kind of hole-y.

http://kbarger314.smugmug.com/photos/631528838_ZWtNP-L.jpg

What do you think? Is it OK? I expected it to be denser from that shot and also this one (http://thewalkertreasury.wordpress.com/2007/04/19/double-lattice/) and this one (http://smariek.blogspot.com/2007/06/double-lattice-cloth.html). I know we need to avoid lace-ish stuff for these blankets?

gmmarton

I think you might need to change up the pattern to reflect a tighter weave, especially if you are working on a preemie baby blanket.

Hope that doesn't create too much stress for you!

SteveDallas
08-27-2009, 10:40 AM
Bah. I took a closer look at what I'd done and couldn't see where the pattern was coming out at all. It turned out I was knitting it wrong! For the Left Twist I was putting the needle into the back of the second stitch from the front instead of from the back. I think that's the root of the problem. That's the second frog... maybe I should just put in a lifeline for the next try!

I have finally begun my section on Tiny Dancer! The weather is just right for having a little blankie sitting on my lap now. Thank goodness! Luckily I had yarn to use for that one in my stash, thanks to the generosity of all you lovely people who send yarn gifts along with the blankets. :muah:

I did something to my knee over the weekend and am pretty much out of commission for a while. I sit in my recliner with a pillow under it and an ice pack over it, either knitting or crocheting or poking around on my laptop. Sounds like a nice way to spend the day, until that's ALL you can do! :nails: Anyway, I guess that means I should be able to finish this one up pretty quickly. Crossed Fingers

I'm doing a pretty pink in Farrow Rib, then bordering it in yellow. Should be pretty when finished...what am I saying? It already IS pretty!

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know I'm working on it! The worsted blanket I have will require a trip to the store for yarn, so I'll just wait until I finish this one and see how mobile I am. My husband just might have to take me yarn shopping! :-P Oh my!

Hi Gang,

Sorry for the prolonged absence. The DK weight blog (http://northeastpreemie.blogspot.com/) and Completed Blanket Blog (http://northeastcompleted.blogspot.com/) have finally been updated! Please let me know if I’ve missed anything.

Thanks again to gmmarton, and all of you, for picking up the slack in my absence. After this weekend’s travels, things should slow down a bit (fingers crossed).

There are still spots for knitters and/or crocheters on:
Weekend Warrior
Earth and Sky

Moonlight Sonata
Liberty Belle

While I was away, I started three new DK weight blankets, but we’ll wait to put them in circulation until the current blankets fill up (and I have thought of names, color themes, and taken pictures ;-)

Hope September was really lovely for all of you.

Well, this has been an interesting evening so far. I left school in the rain, ran a few errands, and wound up coming home in the snow! Oh my gosh! I don't think I've ever seen it snow this early in southern Connecticut!

With that in mind, and the thought that we just might have an extra-long winter this year, I will casting on two new worsted weight baby blankets. I've borrowed the names from the West Coast Oddball Baby Blanket Knitters, so don't thank me, thank them!

Tranquility is the first of the two blankets I'm starting this weekend. This blanket will be done in various shades of white (that includes off-white). This is probably the third monochromatic blanket we'll have done, and I must admit, the one-color theme blankets really make a statement.

The second blanket I'm starting is Jack Frost, in honor of You-Know-Who! I think this will be shades of soft whites and grays to create an icy, cool feel.

So, with that said, if you are interested in working on either of these, please let me know. There is no rush! We've still got a number of blankets out there in circulation, and I'm looking to make another delivery in the next four weeks.

Thanks again everyone for your help!

I'd love to know more about making these blankets! I've read the sticky posts but have a couple more questions. How long does it usually take each person to complete their section? How long does it usually take to complete one whole blanket?

I want to join you all but may need to wait until after Christmas. I must say, though, I'd really like to be a part of the Jack Frost blanket! :D If I could take the next to last spot, about when would the blanket get to me?

Good morning,

We would welcome your help on our Oddball Baby Blankets for the northeast region. We actually have two different kinds of blankets that we work on: worsted weight, which usually run about 5" per section of 6 knitters and our preemie blankets, which usually run about 4" per section of 5 knitters. The preemies are done in DK or sport weight acrylic while our worsted weight blankets are done in just that - worsted weight!

Each person has the blanket for approximately two weeks. We are, however, quite flexible with time and understand that sometimes life just gets in the way! On the flip side, some of our knitters really crank out the blankets, and might only hold the blanket for a few days, speeding up the process.

At this time I couldn't really tell you how soon Jack Frost might find its way to you. I haven't even cast on, nor do I have a full complement of knitters for this blanket. I try and have as many knitters lined up as soon as possible because I don't want our blankets getting stuck somewhere because we don't have enough volunteers. All of our Oddball blankets have been well received by Bridgeport Hospital and CHOP.

Thanks again.

Finally have a minute to tell you all about the fabulous delivery of blankets to the Special Delivery Unit at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

As many of you know, this is a unique unit in the Children’s Hospital where mothers delivering special needs infants (including those with congenital heart, brain, spine, chest and/or abdomen abnormalities) can be under the same roof as their children and cared for together - and Dads don’t have to divide their time between Mom at one hospital and their newborn at another hospital.

The reception that our blankets have gotten is phenomenal! Like so many other centers, the budget for the SDU has been hit particularly hard, and the lovely package of items that they had originally planned to give to these families has been eliminated. All they are able to give them now (thanks to a generous donor) is a picture frame.

But, thanks to all of your efforts, they get a blanket with their picture frame! Sadly, this is all that some parents will ever take home, so it is particularly meaningful. I wonder if we could expand a bit what we write on our cards (sort of a condensed version of what we used to write in the little notepads) as they’ve indicated that the parents were particularly appreciative of the little notes. What does everyone think?

Also, there are about 20 deliveries per month at the SDU. Of course, we can’t make that many blankets, and we certainly are not responsible for having a handmade item for each of their patients, but if anyone is interested in making hats, booties, thumbless mittens, etc. they would be most appreciative, particularly for the holiday season. They mentioned that very small sizes are especially needed.

Happy Thanksgiving to all, and thanks so much for all that you do for the special children at CHOP and Bridgeport Hospital. You should feel very proud! I know this group is one of the many things for which I am thankful.

As many of you know, this is a unique unit in the Children’s Hospital where mothers delivering special needs infants (including those with congenital heart, brain, spine, chest and/or abdomen abnormalities) can be under the same roof as their children and cared for together - and Dads don’t have to divide their time between Mom at one hospital and their newborn at another hospital.

....if anyone is interested in making hats, booties, thumbless mittens, etc. they would be most appreciative, particularly for the holiday season. They mentioned that very small sizes are especially needed.

I think it would be good to post a special request in the Charity section about this need. The title of the post could be "Preemie Babies Need Our Knitting!" Be sure to specify what kind of yarn is recommended for the projects, and provide a mailing address so people can print out all the instructions at once, knit up a few things, and get them in the mail.

The following is a thank-you note that was posted in the forum mailbox. I thought you would enjoy it

Hello!

I hope I have the right e-mail address... I am trying to personally thank the Northeast Regional Knitting Group!

They made a beautiful "Grape Jelly" Oddball blanket for my baby. It was presented to me at the Special Delivery Unit of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

I was so completely touched by their kindness and altruism. The blanket meant so much to me, particularly since my child has a serious heart defect. Knowing that people do care goes a long way in cushioning the blow in some difficult times.

Please pass along my genuine appreciation. The baby will hopefully use this blanket in good health!

Warmest Regards,
Denise Curcio

Thank you for posting that for our members, Jeremy. Spikey made a huge donation of Oddball preemie baby blankets to CHOP recently, and I believe Grape Jelly was in the batch. We know the little ones are so deserving of our attention, and we are so very happy to help.

I've had a number of inquiries about the status of some worsted weight blankets that have been out of circulation for some time now. Those blankets include:

Surf and Sand - stuck with the fifth knitter
Sunny Days - stuck with the third knitter
Pretty Purples - stuck with the fourth knitter

Just a reminder: If you are unable to fulfill your commitment to knit (or crochet) on a blanket within two weeks, please let us know so that we can make adjustments.

Colbysmimi,

I have finished my section of Ladybug and it is ready for you. Are you ready for this little gem? Black yarn will be traveling with the blanket, so you should be all set with your color.

Just let me know as soon as possible. I’m off next week, so I can pop it in the mail anytime.

Thanks so much!

Earlier this week I referenced some blankets that are currently MIA. One of those blankets, Pretty Purples, seems to be stuck with the 4th knitter. My apologies to bobi1218 (who started the blanket), justbeth (the second knitter), and LaraBoBara and Sugarmagknowya who were going to finish up Pretty Purples.

With that said, I am starting a new worsted weight blanket called Purplelicious. We'll work in all shades of purple and knit 5" sections per person.

If you are interested in working on this new blanket, just post to the thread or send me a PM.

I will be casting on this weekend and mailing out my completed section early next week! (Can you tell I'm on vacation???). :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

To my NE Oddball friends:

I have an unexpected project in the near future that will require lots of time after school and weekends. As I am the “go-to” person for this project, I’m sorry to say I must surrender my responsibilities regarding the worsted weight Oddball baby blankets. I won’t be available to start new blankets, update and maintain posts on the thread, spreadsheet, and Blogs, nor will I be able to pull the blankets together and distribute to the Pediatrics Unit of Bridgeport Hospital.

My heart feels very heavy writing this  as I have grown quite attached to the Oddball Group and the unique personalities I’ve come to know and care about. We have done so well with all of our blankets and I am especially proud of the fifty-five worsted weight blankets knit over eighteen months (and delivered to Bridgeport Hospital). :yay: :yay:

The flip side of that is that I’m also feeling overwhelmed :eyes: a not-so-good feeling, as my professional responsibilities continue to expand. After decades of teaching, I never thought it would get this complicated!

I’d certainly like to keep knitting on any blankets where my name is already listed on the spreadsheet; hopefully, I’ll be knitting more blankets for the NE Oddball Group once I get out of school in late June.

In the meantime, keep up the great work. Know that you have made a difference in some little person’s life.

Wishing you continued good fortune, :muah:

Happy knitting! :knitting: :knitting:

My sincerest thanks go out to Gail for all of her efforts for our group! She really has put her blood, sweat, and tears into making these blankets and getting them to the children at Bridgeport Hospital, who love them so dearly.

Her sudden departure means that we need to come up with a plan. The silver lining that may come out of this sad news is that opportunities are now open for others to participate in the coordination of this wonderful blanket effort.

The way I see it, we have a number of options:

1) Someone else takes over the coordination of the WW blankets, and delivers them locally.

2) We divide and conquer WW blankets. Several people share the WW blanket side (one person coordinates, one person keeps the blog up to date, another person receives the finished blankets and washes and delivers them).

3) We continue to make WW (although somewhat smaller) and DK weight blankets, and they all go to the SDU at CHOP. In order for me to be able to manage this, I would need some help with keeping the blogs up to date, as doing that would be too much for one person (when also coordinating, washing, and delivering).

I should note here that the reason that we have been making so many fewer DK weight blankets, is that I did not want to put too many demands on the group, given the large number (and size) of the WW blankets.

One of the things to consider going forward is, do we want to keep making two different sizes of blankets, and using two different yarn weights?

Several of you have PM’ed me already, and I want to reassure you that this group will continue to make beautiful blankets for these special children for as long as folks want to keep doing it.

Since we broke into regional groups, the Northeast group has far and away been the busiest and most prolific. This has been immensely gratifying to me and all of you should be incredibly proud of what we have been able to accomplish together! We currently have 30 total blankets in circulation, while most of the other groups have about 10 at any given time (and that is with intentionally reducing the number of DK weight blankets!).

If anyone has any other suggestions or ideas for how we should proceed from here, they are most welcome. If you do not feel comfortable posting on the thread, please PM me.
Hopefully, as a group, we can come up with a plan that works best for all of us very soon!

Thanks for all that you do, and for all your support! Go Northeast!!!!! :o)

Here’s the new arrangement for the WW blankets:
Beepr will help coordinate the WW posts on the thread, and help with starting new blankets, recruiting knitters & crocheters for blankets.
MotherHenKnits will manage our online tracking spreadsheet and WW blanket blog.
hamham will prep the finished blankets and deliver them to a children’s unit at a hospital in New York.

Thanks to all the volunteers! :woohoo::grphug:

Let’s give this ago for a while and see how it works out. One of the things we’ve been trying to do with the DK weight blankets is have me as the last knitter as often as possible. I hand the blankets over to mdc550 to crochet the border. This saves everyone money, as the blanket is mailed around when smaller, and fewer completed blankets have to be mailed around. I suggest trying this on the WW side, as hamham can be the last knitter and crochet the border (she is more multicrafty than I ;-) Not for every blanket, naturally.

It appears from our little poll that the group is pretty evenly split over the size of the WW blankets. How about if we leave the choice of size up to the person who starts the blanket? When Beepr or the person starting announces the blanket, they can let us know the size. The specifics will go on the instruction sheet, too.

Thanks again to everyone who stepped in to help, and to all of the group members for your continued support of our fantastic project :muah::muah::muah:

Hi Everybody in the Northeast Region!! I'm in the Southeast group (North Carolina), but my mom is up in NY State and wanted to start knitting for charity since she hears me talking about it so much. She doesn't have a computer, so can't really join in on this blog - but I am sending her yarn and needles to make a baby blanket.

She is near Cooperstown - does anyone know where she can donate blankets, hats, booties (whatever she winds up making) locally? I sent her Worsted Weight yarn, but she'll probably want to make preemie things also. Not sure.

Anyway - if anyone has a suggestion for what is needed up that way, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you!

She should contact her local hospital.... they sometimes take donations. I donate to St. Mary's in Amsterdam (if they can't use the item they send it to one of their sister hospitals) where my minions were born.

Friends,

It has been two years since the Northeast Oddball Knitters Group was founded, and it is time for me to step down from the organizing. Since our inception, we have completed 66 worsted weight blankets and 54 DK weight blankets - and there is no end in sight!

The fantastic MotherHenKnits and hamham have agreed to also take over the DK blanket side of our group :woohoo::woot::yay:, for as long as we all want to continue making the wonderful little treasures.
For the time being, I am happy to continue to collect the finished DK weight blankets and keep bringing them to the CHOP Special Delivery Unit, but if someone else wants to bring them elsewhere that would be terrific, too.

I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for your creativity, dedication, hard work, dollars spent on supplies and postage, and countless hours spent knitting :knitting:and crocheting these little oddball tokens of love. They mean so very much to all of the recipients.

For now, I will continue to work on those blankets that are still in circulation, and will help out with knitting when I can. And I’ll continue to hound those who are holding onto our blankets, until they all come home!

Thank you for allowing me to have this wonderful opportunity. :grphug:

Spikey - Thanks so much for your efforts over the years! We all really appreciate all of your hard work.

Moving forward, hamham and I have come up with a plan to keep our group running smoothly:

Hamham will update the completed blanket blog as needed and I’ll do monthly updates on the DK & WW blankets in progress blogs.
Completed WW blankets will still go to hamham for delivery to Montefiore. Completed DK blankets will still go to spikey for delivery in Philly.
New blankets will be started by whoever has the needles and we just ask that you print out the instruction sheet and add a card to sign. If you don’t have time to start a new blanket you can mail the needles to myself or hamham (just check with us first to make sure we’re able to). I purchased 4 sets of needles yesterday to start new DK blankets but I’m waiting for the open spots to be filled on existing blankets before I put these in circulation. I’m so excited that we’re able to keep our group going and I look forward to all of the beautiful blankets we’ll create in the future!

I have another day off from school due to snow and ice, so I’d like to start a new worsted weight baby blanket called Gum Drops. Though the name rings a bell to me, I don’t think we used Gum Drops before for a worsted weight blanket. I stand to be corrected, however, at which point Gum Drops II would be appropriate!

Anyway, the colors I’m thinking include: green, yellow, purple, black, orange and red. Gumdrops probably come in all different colors these days - these are the ones that I remember when I used to enjoy the flavor now and then.

I will probably begin my section using Caron’s Simply Soft in the color Sage.

Any takers? Please make sure you PM MotherHenKnits if you are interested.

Use my design ideas to knit two blankets for your group.

Blanket 1: “GENIUS”
Black, White, and Red

Blanket 2: “SUPERHERO” :star:
Comic Book Colors

I think it will be interesting to see what each group does with this!
I will make a new blog, showing the progress of the blankets. Be sure to post photos, which I can use to highlight the work for your regions!

When the blankets are complete, I will send an additional blanket (knit by me) to your region, for you to donate in your area. So, everyone will be a winner! :)
