Austin is doing well - I think he's getting used to all the being messed with that comes with being in a hospital. You know the nurses coming in every hour to do treatments, twice daily bandage changes, etc. He does much better during bandage changes if Allen or I am in there so we try to make sure one of us is there. I do not let Ben stay for those. I think Ben being here is a big help to Austin. Ben sits in a chair up near Austin's head & they watch movies together, Ben will tell him about the different comic books he's reading atm & when Austin wants something to drink Ben gets it for him. He can't actually drink anything on his own yet - they have these things called toothettes which are like a little sponge on a lolipop stick that we dip in whatever drink Austin wants & he gets to suck the juice off of them. The Dr. capped his trach for a little while yesterday so he could talk. He didn't talk very much but I'm sure everything just felt weird & the more he gets used to it the more he will talk. We received cards from mks22300 yesterday - thank you!

Hey Rabbit:waving:
Thank you so much for the continual updates. I am sure that it is hard to get away to pay attention to us folks over here, but we all sure do appreciate the updates!
Did you end up having to find homes for all of your rabbits? I really thought of you when I heard that you might, after all of the work that you have done, it broke my heart to think you might have to give them all up. :pout:
Please keep posting, and let us know if there is ANYTHING at all that we can do to help your family thru this rough time.
:muah:

Thanks! No I didn't have to give all of my bunnies away - we still have 4 of them. Three of those I have had since they were little babies. Fiona - my 10#er was so small when I got her she would fit in the palm of my hand. The 4th bunny isn't the prettiest girl as she was let loose in the wild & got attacked by something so she has lots of scars & a big hole in her ear. We felt she would have a hard time finding a home due to her appearance so we decided she should stay with us. The SPCA was actually screening people to make sure they were rabbit savvy before letting them adopt my bunnies:cheering: When I first started taking in bunnies from them they didn't even have a questionaire let alone screen people who wanted to adopt a bunny! I really felt better knowing my kids were going to bunny knowledgeable folks.

Rabbit, I think having everyone there for Austin is a big help in the right direction...As for Ben and Austin this a very good therapy for both of them...I think the time they spend together helps them both from a emotional stand point...The boys are real trooppers. Keep the updates coming...All my love to the family...Love, Grandma Maria
Rabbit, just wanted you to know that I check this thread everyday to see how your family is doing. I'm sure there are lots of people that don't post but are praying for your family.

Hello all!
First of all, thank you for the incredible outpouring of love, donations, and goodies. My jaw has not come off the floor since last Saturday.
As promised, I am posting details on the donations I've received.
I received a check in the mail today, which brings the total funds received to $523.71. Paypal charged $18.61 in fees, bringing the grand total to $505.10.
I'm thinking that I'll add 400 minutes to Rabbit's Tracfone. This bundle of minutes runs at $99.99. I've tried to call Tracfone about the company possibly donating more time, but they are notoriously difficult to get in touch with.
Tomorrow I'm going to call a local gift shop and order a colorful (mylar) balloon arrangement. Now that Austin is able to open his eyes, he will be able to enjoy them. I'll post more info about the balloons as soon as I call. I would like to save a small amount of money to send Austin some balloons two or three more times.
His birthday is in August...I believe Rabbit said August 27th. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Timing goodies for around this day would be great!
I would like to purchase a VISA gift card for Rabbit. I'm thinking $250. Does this sound okay?
I wanted to assure you that the money you donated is sitting in an account that has none of my personal money in it. The account will ONLY be used for Rabbit's family.
Thank you for entrusting me with this task. You are all so wonderful.
You might also try contacting PayPal. They might waive the fees for this purpose. They might require a special account setup for it, but since this looks like a long term thing maybe that would be a good idea.

Rabbit any more updates on Austins progress. Hope you are all well.
Sorry he was more awake yesterday & I was in with him all day. He would be out for a few minutes & then he'd wake up & call for me so I didn't feel comfortable leaving. Hubby even had to bring me dinner in there - yup I can eat in there now. He is cruising along in the right direction still. He went in surgery this morning & all went well - they were just doing all the prep work for tomorrow. They plan to use his scalp as a donor site & go up further on his arms. I'll either be on sometime tomorrow evening or Wed morning to let everyone know how it went. I saw his hands this afternoon during bandage change & they look good! Dr. is still not sure about the tips but says the rest looks great. And the cultured skin is still progressing as it should.

Austin just got out of surgery - everything went well. He's in post op recovery now so I can't see him yet. They were able to graft all the way up his left arm!! :cheering: They didn't have enough donor skin to go any further on his right arm but hopefully his lower legs will be healed enough to use them again next week to go further on his right arm. No more surgeries for the rest of this week. We'll probably be in that just moving along phase for the rest of the week - so if you don't hear from me that just means there wasn't anything to report or that his majesty won't let me leave the room. :teehee:
Forgot to mention that we received packages yesterday from Figaro - the kids loved it! & Dorothy Dot - beautiful!
Today a package from Knittinmitchie arrived! Austin smiled when I showed him his gift & Ben said big thanks from him. Thanks ladies!

I got to see his left arm during the bandage change yesterday - it looks great! He said hopefully his lower legs will be all healed up by next week - they are looking good too. He said his fingertips are looking better as well. The cultured skin is still progressing as planned too - so that'll be ready on Aug. 15th. And he said his chest is ready for it too - everything is nice & pink & healthy looking. His body has started rejecting the cadaver skin that they covered him with - totally normal as your body won't accept any skin except yours. So they will have to go back in & put some more on - this is a procedure they will have to do several times until they have all of his areas grafted. From what they tell me the healthier you get the faster your body rejects the cadaver skin. He had a Ketamine bandage change yesterday & was telling me all kinds of interesting things as he was coming out of it. :teehee: I know I keep saying this but thanks to everyone for all the prayers & well wishes! I am so happy to be a part of the wonderful KH family :grphug:

Oh, I am SO glad that Austin is coming along so well...it totally warms my heart.
A couple of days ago, I was cooking and very minorly burnt my finger. At first, I was upset because of the pain but then I felt so humbled in thinking about Austin's bravery in the face of so much pain and discomfort and stress...and I felt so ashamed of myself for overreacting to something that wasn't really that big of a deal that I fell to my knees to pray right there for him, for Ben and your family once again for healing and peace and love.
What a strong and brave young man you have there, Rabbit. And it sounds like Ben is holding up wonderfully, too.

I just joined this group today and I read all posts concerning Rabbit's son. I know exactly what he is going through. My husband went through it in 2004 when he was injured in an accident at work that left him with 3rd degree burns on the backs of both hands, a spot about the size of a sofball on his stomach and a spot about the size of a silver dollar on his thigh.. He had to wear pressure garments after the burns had healed to protect the tender new skin. It took a year for the skin to toughen up enough to where he could go without the pressure garment. Your son may need to wear pressure garments to protect his new skin. The garments are specially made for each individual and they are functional, not fashionable. I am not trying to scare you but just warning Rabbit what is ahead and in store for her son.I have placed the entire family in my prayers.

Austin went in to surgery this morning - they were basically just cleaning things up to get ready for tomorrow when they will do more grafting. The Dr. said she isn't sure if she's going to go further up his right arm or do 1 or both legs. She said she wants to gather what she gets from the donor sites, look at what she's got to work with & make a decision then. I'll be on tomorrow to let everyone know how it went. They also send cultures off once a week here & they got results back saying he has MRSA which the nurse assures me is totally normal in cases like Austin's where they have open wounds.
We received a card today from someone in MO & a cute postcard from LuLu - Thank You!

It is a shame about the MRSA but as you say with wounds like that it is to be expected. I am glad they are on top of it and are looking after him so well. it sounds like a fabulous hospital he is in.
I hope you and the boys (older and young) are ok and are looking after yourselves too.
NB: for anybody who chooses to google MRSA, be very carefull what you read online. I am sure you know to take things published online with a pinch of salt anyway, but it is an issue which the British tabloids have picked up on and shoose to use as a scare story and as fuel when they want to attack the government and the NHS so a lot of what is being published is disproportionate and biased more than usuall. I just dont want people getting oveerly scared by it.

Oh yes, I totally forgot! The Knitter organized her Canadian knitters to do this.
Does anyone have a wall map where they could pinpoint the locations of all of the places he's receiving cards from? This was The Knitter's idea (must give credit where credit is due). I could always use some of the money I collected to purchase one.

I've gotta tell you...my daughter just got over this infection. She brought it home from soccer camp, and it was nasty stuff! The doctor did a culture, which didn't come back until after my daughter was well on her way to healing. After hearing what strain it was, I totally freaked out. It can be scary stuff; however, the young are lucky because their immune systems can fight it off much better than older people's.
I talked to Rabbit yesterday, and she explained that the nurses said that they see this all the time in burn victims. It's very common but not difficult to deal with.

Austin's surgery went well today. The Dr. grafted his right arm & the one spot below his knee on the right side. They plan to graft his back next Friday. When they graft his back he will have to lay on his stomach for 7-10 days so life will be pretty much miserable for him for that time. They are hoping to put a smaller trach in tomorrow & hopefully pull it Friday. It's much easier for everyone if he doesn't have a trach in while on his stomach. So we'll cross our fingers that all goes well. He remembers his accident clearly & talks about it to me. He kept rolling his shoulder up so I could see part of his back last night & saying to me "Mom, look at that" I asked him what he wanted me to see & he said "the burns - why did I have to get burned mom?" I told him this is why they call it an accident & he will be ok. Then he told Ben he was lucky that he didn't get burned & thanked him for spraying him with the water hose to put the fire out. He screams during his bath & bandage changes now that he has become more aware of things & begged me to make the nurses stop hurting him. I have never felt more heartbroken in my life than I do during those.

As I told Auburnchick yesterday I understand now how some people can wallow in self pity but I won't allow myself or Austin to do so. He had his bath this morning & of course he hated every minute of it. We keep telling him the alternative would be much worse.

Rabbit I know the nurse don't mean to hurt Austin, poor thing. I know he's remembering the accident which in some ways is good and in some its bad.
I know when I total my car YEARS ago I had bad nightmare of the accident over and over. the doctor told us that this is the unconscious
part of the brain at work while you sleep. I just hope Austin doesn't go through that.

One other thing. My dh's friend was burned over 60 percent of his body years ago when he was 12 What got him through the baths was music.
Can Austin have an ipod to listen too if he needs to sort of 'get away' from the pain? Sort of a distraction?
DorothyDot
08-06-2008, 08:53 PM
TokMom is quite right. You learn to "think yourself" into the music - the worse the pain, the deeper you "think". And the louder you play the music, too.
Dear Rabbit, if ever you need to vent - please feel free to pm me. As one who's also had numerous operations [knee] - but nowhere near as much pain as poor Austin - I firmly believe that it is the mother who is by your side that suffers most - I could always relieve some of the pain by screaming. She never could. That must be by far the greatest suffering of all.
I heard somewhere that when a child goes through much suffering and pain, it either makes him mature far, far beyond his years.. or makes him terrified of pain. Do work hard to force the doctors and nurses to keep Austin from suffering as much as humanly possible.
And do be sure you can find time - and some way - to have your own private "screaming sessions". These are soooo vital to your own mental health and strength! One way I used to cope would be to break out the guitar, lock the door and howl out songs at the very top of my lungs. "Ghost Riders In the Sky" has a wonderfully keening Yippeee-iiiii-aaaayyy in every chorus, for example.
Maybe you could teach Austin how to retreat to an imaginary "happy place" in his mind - say, a circus? Or hiking in the woods? Playing with his dog? Or whatever thrills his 10-11 year-old heart. Then he can mentally retreat during some of the worst periods.
I'm rambling. Sorry - I truly mean to help. Take whatever ideas work for you and ignore the rest of my mumblings.
My heart, prayers, and thoughts all go out to you, dear Rabbit.

1. You have to vent. Keeping it in will cause you damage, both physical and emotional. So bring it on!!!!!
2. What a great presence of mind to act under that circumstance. How many 8 year olds would act to get water.
3. Do you have access to mental health specalist/clergy? Someone who can help you with ways to help you and your family?
You are in our prayers

Thanks for the moral support - y'all are great :grphug:
I've finally convinced him they don't give him baths to hurt him. He actually said thank you to one of the nurses once she wrapped his arm back up yesterday. It rips my heart out to hear him screaming during the bandage changes but leaving the room & making him go it alone is not an option - some of the parents here do that. He has a radio & a TV in his room but all he can focus on at this point is the pain - we're working on it. I have tried talking to him about the movie that he watches ALL the time - yup same movie over & over again all day every day for the last 3 weeks. I can quote the whole thing in my sleep at this point :teehee: It's Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey & he watches it b/c of the Bulldog since we have one. So I am going to ask a big favor - if anyone can find a stuffed animal that looks anything like Zeus & would be willing to send it to him I will pay all expenses. I have talked to the girls here & he can have it if we put it in a plastic biohazard bag.

Also if anyone can find a stuffed dog that looks like Ben's dog Mr. Bones same thing. Ben is holding up very well except for missing his pooch terribly - he goes into my Flickr account every time we are in our room to look at pics of him.

:waving: Hi Rabbit!
I put together an extra special package just for you, it will be in the mail tomorrow. Auburnchick was kind enough to pm me the shriners' address, so it will be going there.
Just a note, a friend of mine, Amy, aka Knitswithisis on Ravelry, gave me some very lovely help with the package. She picked out the .. um.. yarn...I don't see her often, so she was unable to sign the card with me. And um... the thing on the thing.. it's a rabbit. You'll know when you get it.
That's the only hints you get.
I hope you like the goodies, I adore putting together pressies for others, and this was my personal mission these past 2 months.
Please dont' think that the rest of your family especially darling Austin isn't in my thoughts, they are, I just thought you deserved a treat for yourself. I can only imagine that being a mommy in this situation, you have probably put aside the things you love to be there for your family. This is just to remind you of what an awesome person you are and give you a reward.
Love and hugs!:muah:

Austin was holding some action figures in his hand yesterday which made his Dr.'s & physical therapists very happy. The Dr.'s are pleased with the way the grafted areas are looking so far. Austin just had a bronchoscopy done this morning. The Dr. wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong with his airway before removing the trach. They found a granuloma & removed it. They will give him some meds to hopefully help prevent another one from forming & will recheck in a few weeks. They plan to plug his trach today & see how things go - still hoping to have it out before surgery later this week. He is getting much better about the bath & bandage changes. There is one nurse who was in with him Saturday & she did almost his whole bath by herself & he was so calm during it. If she worked a regular schedule I would have already begged her to be one of his primary nurses. I decided this weekend that I needed to find an LYS to get my fix :teehee: So I pm'd a fellow raveler from Cincinnati (Happycat) who responded with not only what stores are good but an invitation to take us whenever we wanted to go! So We went yesterday to http://www.knit-on.com/. Wow!! I could get lost in there for days. Three rooms overflowing with yarn! Ben & I got some Dark Horse Fantasy - he got green (I know- shocking) & I got a very pretty purple variegated. I also sprung for some Mmmmmalabrigo in Emerald. Austin has decided he gets to pick what I make with it. She also treated us to ice cream at a place called Graeters. Yummmmm! Just another example of how knitters are the best people around!

Actually the first thing he asked me after he opened the box was if you were online so he could tell you thank you. We have to open mail in our room due to the MRSA precautions - nothing that goes in can leave until the infection is gone & then it has to be sterilized. So we got online & I told him you weren't here but he could send you a pm.

Austin had another good day today. He went out to the nurses station to hang out with the girls for awhile & he went downstairs to the activity room - he has to go when no one else is in there due to the MRSA but he enjoyed it. They also did a trial run of him laying on his stomach for 2 hours today. He tolerated it very well. The lady who works in the lab here (where they work their magic with the cultured skin) told me from this point on things move very fast. I still haven't been given a time frame for when we might get to go home but every day we get a little closer.
Austin got post cards from Mirl56 & the Webb family today. Thank you!

Austin just got out of surgery a little while ago - Dr. said everything looked great. :cheering: They used the cultured skin & donor skin from his scalp & shoulders to get his entire back done. They plan to graft the backs of his legs next Friday so that means he will be on his stomach for at least 14 days maybe more. But the nurses here will do all they can to make sure he is as comfortable as possible during that time. He was a little upset that he won't be able to leave his room again for awhile but understood once we explained why. Dr. will have a look at the grafted area on Sunday to see how it's taking. I'll be sure to let everyone know what he says.

We had the 2 day post op "let's have a look" bandage change today. Dr. said everything looked great! :woot: They will look again on Wednesday to see how it looks. He is doing good on his stomach - he's
sleeping more but he's a stomach sleeper so I imagine that has something to do with it.

Thanks for the update, my friend. Isn't it neat to see how everything is working out. I know there has been a tremendous concern about his having to lie on his stomach for so long, but what a wonderful blessing...the additional rest...that will certainly help heal his body that much faster.

Yup the address is still the same. The boys like sports but haven't ever been team specific - just watch them sometimes with dad. I might just have to become a UVA fan though after the excellent care my kiddo got while he was there. :)
Austin is doing good today. He is a little tired of being on his stomach 24/7 at this point but he understands why. The nurse he had last night told me he's tolerated it better than most kids do.
Austin got a huge stack of mail today. He got 26 post cards from all around the world!! Way too many names for me to remember to give credit but they were all from folks here or on Ravelry. There were also 5 cards in there! You guys are awesome - Thank you!! :grphug: :grphug:

I got to see Austin's back today - it looks good. The plan is to graft the backs of his legs this Friday. Thankfully he doesn't have to stay on his stomach for the whole 7-10 days for the legs though. So he will continue to stay on his stomach until Monday. But at least he will be off his stomach in time for his birthday!:woot: I tried to get the powers that be at the hospital to agree to let Zeus come see him for his birthday - I even told them Zeus would be happy to make the rounds & visit all the kids in the hospital. What kid wouldn't be happy to see a dancing dog? No go - party poopers :teehee: But at least he'll still get to have a party - the nurses have already got it planned. He got a package from LuLu2 yesterday & several cards & post cards today. Thank you!!:grphug:
Momwolf - the hats arrived today. So cute!!! I took them down to the volunteer office & there was much fuss made over them. They will be sending you a thank you card. Where did you find the patterns for those or are they your designs? I'd like to try making a few myself.

Also I have sent Austin BIG map so he can mark all of the wonderful places his post cards have come from. I even had it gift wrapped for his birthday next week.

Austin came through surgery fine today. The Dr. said he got the back of both legs done without using all of the cultured skin that was ready this week. :happydance: They usually have 800cm each week to work with - he sent 100cm back up to the lab to save for next week. So they will have 900cm of cultured skin plus all of his scalp & most of his lower legs to use for donor sites next week. Dr. thinks it just might be enough to do his entire chest/abdomen. If that happens then all that will be left to graft would be the front of both legs. I still haven't been given a time frame for when we might be able to go home but I'm thinking another month maybe a little more.

Rabbit,
I have to say, I am very impressed with Austin. He is handling this terrible trauma with a strength and maturity that very few adults would show, let alone a 10-year-old.
Kudos to you, of course. But Austin is a very inspirational young man. I wish with all my heart I could know him personally - he most certainly could teach me a few lessons on pain management and courage! And I've battled it for over 40 years.
Be very proud of your boy. He will grow into a wonderfully wise and compassionate man... in fact, I think he is well on his way there.
Please tell Austin what I've said. He needs to realize how very gifted he is. God has given him strength and wisdom beyond his years. I pray for Austin every day, like most everyone else on this thread.
Be proud, Austin. Be strong. Be kind. And know you are loved beyond all knowledge.
You are a very, very special and gifted young man.
Sincerely,
Dot

Austin had a nice birthday today! Since today was a day 5 post op bath/bandage change he got Ketamine so he got to sleep through the whole thing. And b/c it was done so late (they had to wait for a Dr.) he didn't have to have a second one today! He told his nurse that he liked that present best. He got some cool presents & he got a huge bunch of Happy Birthday :balloons: from the KH family! Those got a big smile - he was still pretty out of it from the ketamine when they got here. Thank you!! :grphug: The post cards are still coming every day & the map arrived yesterday. He is just so happy when I show him all the post cards. He calls his blanket that came in Monday his special blanket & wants it on him all the time now. He still wants his blue sports blanket & brown knitted blanket where he can see them though. Momwolf - the puppy was a big hit - he was so happy to see it! It's name is Zeus.
The plan is to get the whole chest/abdomen grafted this Friday & then next week to graft the front of both legs. After that the physical therapy kicks into high gear & we gotta get him eating. I tried my best but the offer of cake got a firm "No".

No date has been given yet. I did have one nurse tell me we have at least another month maybe more to go though. He will be getting more cultured skin this week when they graft the front of his legs. And with cultured skin there is pretty much no moving for 15 days - just rolling from side to side during bedding changes. So it will be at least 2 weeks from Friday before they even try to get him up & walking. Plus he still isn't eating much. I keep telling him he can't go home until he eats.

The Dr. got the last areas grafted today!! He will need at least 1 touch up surgery as we lost a square here & there. For those who didn't google cultured skin the areas of cultured skin look kinda like those little tiles you see in public bathrooms - little squares with tiny spaces between them. The spaces fill in as the grafts heal. Hopefully now that he is covered the MRSA will go away. They switched his nausea meds yesterday so hopefully that will help as well & he'll be eating soon.

Wow! Hurray for Austin! Please let Austin know that if he eats, he will get better faster. Getting better requires protein and other things to provide his body with the skin building materials.

:woohoo: Austin is officially covered!!!!!!!!! :cheering: :woot:
The Dr. got the last areas grafted today!!
Rabbit,
Wonderful news..things are looking up and in time your be home. Hug to the whole family...Did Austin and Ben get the cards I send them last week? Love Grandma:hug: :muah:

I've only just joined the list but have heard about Austin's plight from Linnypin.
What I'm hoping to do is get my knitting group to knit a load of the Austin Bears that Linda has designed. Some we will give to the local children's ward and others will be sold during National Knitting Week here in the UK and I would like to give the proceeds to the hospital where Austin is being treated if possible. So, Rabbitrescuer - I was wondering if you have a paypal account or something so that when we do sell the bears, I can send the money to you to pass on to the hospital. No rush yet as National Knitting Week is next month but PM me when you get the chance.
I'm so pleased to hear that Austin is on the mend. I wouldn't wish those kinds of injuries on my worst enemy! He is a very brave and very special boy to go through what he is. You have truly been blessed with a strong son there! I am keeping you all in my thoughts. I send love, light, strength and healing to you all.
