Hi, I am new to this board and also a fairly new knitter. I just found out that a friend is having her first baby this winter. I want to knit her a baby blanket and maybe even try a sweater. Do any of you have patterns that you can recommend for either of these that are not too overly complicated? Also, what is a good yarn for baby items that isn't too costly? I'm back in college and only working part time so my budget is a little tighter than I'm used to. A really soft, washable yarn would be nice. I was planning to order for the first time from Knit Picks for a different project so I can just add to that order if they sell a good yarn for this project. One last thing, I don't think she is planning to find out the baby's sex so I was thinking of going with green or yellow. What do you think? Thank you so much for all of your help with this. This is the first baby project I've ever attempted!

If you order from knitpicks choose the Swish washable wool or one of the cotton yarns. If you buy locally look for an acrylic; babies emit all sorts of body fluids and no new mom has time to hand wash delicated little items. They won't get used.

For patterns there's a fair selection at knittingpatterncentral.com and dailyknitter.com
