My granddaughter needed a quickie birthday present for a friend and wanted a football. I looked high and low for a pattern, but couldn't find one to knit. I had to create one!

Anyway, while I was bragging on myself to some friends at another board, 2 of them wanted a football for their son/grandson.

Here is the pattern I came up with. This is just the first draft from my notes. If you would like to try it and let me know of any glitches, I would appreciate it.

Football

Needles: 4 or 5 depending on how loose you knit

Yarn: regular weight knitting worsted
small amounts of 2 colors

Make four panels in stockinette stitch.
Knit all odd number rows and purl all even number rows
Cast on 2 stitches

Row Stitch count
1 Knit
2 Knit 2
3 Increase 1 st at beg and end of row 4
4 Purl
5 Increase 1 st at beg and end of row 6
6 Purl
7 Increase 1 st at beg and end of row 8
8 Purl
9 Increase 1 st at beg and end of row 10
10 Purl
11 Increase 1 st at beg and end of row and change to contrast color 12
12 – 14 purl even rows and knit odd rows
15 – 18 change back to main color
19 Increase 1 st at beg and end of row 14
20 – 37 purl even rows and knit odd rows
38 – 42 Decrease 1 st at beg and end of row 12
43 – 46 contrast color
47 Decrease 1 st at beg and end of row and change back to main color 10
48 Purl
49 Decrease 1 st at beg and end of row 8
50 – 51 Purl row 50, knit row 51
52 Decrease 1 st at beg and end of row 6
53 Knit
54 Decrease 1 st at beg and end of row 4
55 Knit
56 Decrease 1 st at beg and end of row 2
57 Knit and bind off

Finishing: If you want to put a name on the football, now is the time.
Sew all seams together from the inside leaving an
opening between the contrasting colors on the seam
above the name.
Stuff.
Close the seam and put the lacing on with a tapestry
needle.

Well, that didn't work too well. The numbers on the right should be the stitch count.

That would make a cute gift for any little boy. Or little girl who likes football. You really did a great job, making the pattern and them knitting them.

I thought about that to avoid all the seaming, but DGD really wanted it to look as much like a real football as possible. I was stuck with seams.

Thank you.

Yes, he lives near there. Had a harder time with U of Michigan. Do you know their colors are blue and maize? Which shade of yellow is maize?

Cute little personalized footballs. Very well executed. Those would be very popular with new dads who like football.

I'm not sure what color maize is, but I've seen some yarns with a color that is called "cornmeal" and that might be the same.
