I'm knitting a toddler sweater in pieces

I just knit the back

BACK
Cast on 43 (47, 51, 55, 59) sts.
Working back and forth on circular needle, as if working on straight needles, work 5 rows in Seed st.
Change to St st (k on RS, p on WS) and work until piece measures 4 1/2 (5 1/2, 6 1/2, 7 1/4, 9 1/4) in. (11.5 (14, 16.5, 18.5, 23.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Armhole
Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows - 37 (41, 45, 49, 53) sts. Place sts on a holder.

Than i am making the sleeves && fronts...

&&Putting them all back on the needle && knitting...

Do I cut the pieces from the working yarn &&leave a tail or what?

I have the back piece &&before I can move on I'm trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do
I don't want to mess this up, its the first time I've attempted it.

Help!

You can start the next piece with yarn from another skein, but if you have a lot in the one you did the back with, go ahead and cut it, leave a 4-6" tail. The last piece you make, you can leave the yarn attached so you can use it to knit all the pieces together.

Thank you!

I had figured something like that
but than I wasn't sure how long of a tail I should leave

The tail length should be whatever you need to weave in the ends later, and it can also be used to close up any small holes at the underarm where the sleeves and body are joined.

So a little extra would be better than too little?

Definitely.
