This was the project that got me interested in knitting. I was browsing the internet for baby shower gifts and came across the Baby Knits Kit, by Sara Lucas. It includes 20 patterns, everything from clothing to toys to scrapbooks and mobiles. The kit comes with yarn for a pair of booties. So I started with those in order to learn the basics. I never finished them, but I learned to knit, purl, do several increases and decreases, as well as a couple seams. Then I started on the elephant, where I learned to knit in the round.

It uses Blossom by Reynolds.

I have a few more FOs since, and a WIP.

So, did you make two elephants? They are sure cute. Toys are a really good way to learn a lot of things about shaping etc.

No, I just did one (the white one). The first was from the pattern. I failed to understand the importance of gauge swatch at this point, and just used the suggested needle size, which affected the shape somewhat, and gave him really small feet. You can't really see the stitches as nicely, either.

The other thing I failed to master is the i-cord (trunk). What I would get is 3 really tight stitches and 1 loose one, so I just did it on DPNs. You kind of have to keep track of which way the needles should be oriented so you don't twist them, but fortunately the trunk gets bigger as it goes, so you eventually have at least 2 stitches on every needle.
