Thanks to everyone here's advise on sizing etc. I had to start this twice cos my gauge was off. I finally got it done today - it still needs washed and it has cat fur on it - fingers crossed for the final try on!
(if you are on ravelry I wrote more about it here (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/lucy78green/mens-pullover))

Thanks guys, I'm having trouble deciding what to do next now - thinking about researching how to do bust darts, but scared it might be too complicated!

I think that's where I found the excel file I downloaded off the internet ages ago, you put in your measurements and it gives you numbers out the other end. Now I just have to work out what to do with those numbers! I've never knit anything in the round top down either, but my sis gave me a 1450 yard skein of Mountain Colours Weavers Wool for my 30th birthday that she bought on holiday in America, so I was thinking about making the Mystique Sweater (http://ziaperamore.blogspot.com/2007/01/maybe-i-give-up.html) with it. Not sure if it's a good idea though!

Everything in this house has cat fur in it, trouble is I think the cat was licking one of the balls of wool when I was knitting it

Thanks everyone, the pattern is Stylcraft 8240 Life. It's supposed to have a higher neck with a zip in the raglan seam, but I knew the byf wouldn't wear it that way. Imade the neck larger so it didn't need the zip, and I knit it in the round bottom up instead of knit flat so I didn't have to seam it. Still had to double over and seam the neckband and the bottom, but not nearly as bad!
