View Full Version : Jaywalker's for my Daughter

This is sort of a sad story for me. I had this beautiful skein of Lavender Sheep hand died 100% Merino wool sock yarn. It was lovely on the skein, I had it for a year and hesitated to use it. It was also fairly expensive. The color way is Monet's Garden. This yarn can be found here: http://www.lavendersheep.com/

Finally I decided on the Jaywalker pattern. Well the pattern and various commentators do say this pattern has very little give, but the cast on was more than I usually do for a sock, and as I began the sock and worked the leg I thought it was going to be fine. But when I finally got the heel I realized they were too narrow. I discovered that the yarn knits to a finer gauge than most sock yarns--like 9 stitches to the inch instead of the usual 8 for me. On larger needles it would have looked too loose. It is very delicate and splits sometimes, I had noted it didn't like much frogging. I did not want to rip.

So they became my daughters socks. Even on her the heel is snug. But they are very pretty and very soft and she at least appreciates them. I told her to wear them very carefully, that they are luxury socks.
