Please help....I think I'm losing my mind

I am trying to make a baby cap, and I think the pattern is mistyped. Can someone please help me? Below is the pattern...

CO 53....work ribbing for 8 rows (this part I understand).
Rows 9 - 23 work Stockinette St (I'm ok here too)
Row 24 - Start Decrease - K1, K2 tog (here is my problem). With 53 stitches the decrease does not come out even.

Should I do an extra decrease on the edge (this cap has a seam up the back), or do an increase at the edge and then decrease across?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!:wall:

Are you supposed to k1, k2tog all the way across the row? If so, you would end with ...k1, k2tog and 2 sts left over. You can either just knit them both or dec, but don't inc. What does the next decrease row say?

Yes, I am supposed to k1, k2 tog across the row. The next row is a purl row, and then the same decrease row. The pattern says to work these two rows until there are 12 stitches left on the needle.

I hope that makes sense....

I'd just k2 separately at the end, the next dec row it may turn out right.

I always cast on a number that will work evenly, generally a multiple of 10. You can fudge a bit on the cast on if the pattern is simple stockinette.

Alternate solution is that you begin and end with a k or p outside the pattern (rib or dec) for a selvage edge for the seam up the back.

What is the rib pattern that you didn't have trouble with 53 stitches... 53 is prime so no size repeated rib would end evenly. :think:

There must be one selvage stitch at the start and end of each row for the seam. leaving 51 sts for the repeated pattern. 53 is a multiple of 3.

So for decrease row: k1 (k1, k2 tog) repeat across and then k last stitch.
Or K1 (k2 tog, k1) across and k1 last stitch.

But for the next decrease you have 36 stitches or 12 repeats of (k1, k2 tog) which leave 24 on needle.

then 16 sts after third decrease

Fourth decrease row again you would need to k1 at beginning or end of 5 repeats of (k1, k2 tog) leaving 11 sts on needle.

But the pattern expects you to stop decreases at 12 stitches? :wall:
