There is a cabled purse that I want to make, which calls for super chunky yarn (2 st per inch on size 15 needles). I've found some yarn which will work (Cascade yarn), but I don't love any of the colours. Would I be able to use say a chunky yarn, and hold 2 strands of it?

Yes. I am doing a cabled hoody which called for a worsted weight yarn. My son loved this lighter weight yarn I am double stranding the yarn. You must do a gauge swatch and will either go up or down a needle size depending on how you knit. I ended going up a needle size and my friends at the LYS said I might have to when you double strand. There is pictur of it in my projects of the back on Ravelry.
