View Full Version : Special Delivery Unit Needs Our Help

As some of you may know, the Northeast Knitters make worsted weight blankets that gmmarton delivers to the Children's Unit at Bridgeport Hospital in CT, and DK weight blankets that I deliver to the Special Delivery Unit of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The SDU is a unique unit where mothers delivering special needs infants (including those with congenital heart, brain, spine, chest and/or abdomen abnormalities) can be under the same roof as their children and cared for together - and Dads donít have to divide their time between Mom at one hospital and their newborn at another hospital.

There are about 20 deliveries per month at the SDU. Of course, we canít make that many blankets, and we certainly are not responsible for having a handmade item for each of their patients, but if anyone is interested in making hats, booties, thumbless mittens, etc. they would be most appreciative, particularly for the holiday season.

They mentioned that very small sizes are especially needed. Our blankets are all 100% acrylic, and we use soft DK weight yarn, but worsted would be fine, too, for the other items. Please try to avoid lacy patterns that might catch little fingers or toes, but otherwise be as creative as you'd like. :knitting:

Like so many other centers, the budget for the SDU has been hit particularly hard, and the lovely package of items that they had originally planned to give to these families has been eliminated. All they are able to give them now (thanks to a generous donor) is a picture frame. We would love it if a hand-knitted item could accompany as many of those picture frames as possible!

Sadly, this is all that some parents will ever take home, so it is particularly meaningful.

There is a lovely note that Jeremy recently posted in the Northeast thread, from a mother whose child was born at the SDU and received one of our blankets. It is worth reading!

If you are interested in donating any knitted items, please PM me.

Thanks!!!! :muah:

I have found some good knitting patterns for preemie items here:

I most certainly have a lot of baby yarn. I don't know why. :?? but I do. Will you be collecting the items and passing them on Spikey? Or will we send them all individually?

I am collecting the items and delivering them to the unit, but each knitter should feel free to put in a card with their items (or even one with each item, as we do with our blankets).

They ask that there be no references made to religion or to the health of the baby.

Thanks!

Do they accept quilts?

It's uber easy to go and make preemie/newborn size quilts (lots of patterns at project linus)....

Good question! I'll check with them. Pretty sure that they would need to be machine washable. Is that a problem? I (obviously) don't know anything about making quilts.

being machine washable isn't a problem, all we need to do really is follow the project linus (http://www.projectlinus.org/faqs.html)guidelines for materials and such

generally cottons or cotton blends or fleeces, NO buttons or anything metallic, some hospitals are picky as to whether or not the quilts can be tied (embroidery floss instead of actual quilting, My sister (works with the local PL chapter) says to use cotton quilting thread to assemble the blankets because the blends will rip through the cotton fabric on the quilt....

:waving: Hey spikey!
I finished my 1st one, it's from a pattern for hats for preemies 1-3 pounds. I included a quarter for size. What do you think?

I'm making a little set for a preemie baby on the Bernat Blog (http://bernat.com/blog/) this month, and the set is coming your way when it's done!

Howdy All!

It has been a horribly long time since I have been able to do any knitting but I want to get back into the game. A preemie set and a small blanket sounds like the perfect project. I will be posting pictures of my progress hopefully soon. :)

I also have some acrylic items that I was given by my SnB to donate but they are larger than preemie. Would you like them? They are beautifully knitted and on the smaller side of things anyway. One is blue with white buttons and one is baby pink with white buttons.

Can you please send me your address so I know where to send it? Thank you so much for organizing this!

Love,
Lexie

Hi All!

Woo! I have a hat, and pair of tube socks that I found on Ravelry. I am in the middle of a blanket as well - just an update! :)

I asked someone on Ravelry and she said that the blankets should be around 12" square. Does this sound right?

All The Best,
Lexie

Hi Again All!

Here is what I am sending out! :

(That isn't working for me, so if it is not working for you it can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26202486@N05/4925127413/ Sorry!

I did one hat, one pair of tube socks and two preemie quilts. They are my first quilts but I am happy with how they turned out so hopefully off they go. :)

Can somebody please pm me with an address to send my new goodies? Thank you so much for the opportunity to help!

Love,
Lexie

Beautiful, Lexie! :inlove:
Just send a PM to Spikey, and she will let you know where it should be mailed. You can reach her here or on Ravelry. She has the same name in both places.
