Ok guys here is a puzzler, at least for me. I have worked the sweater part of Plymouth 1416, it looks very nice all put together....now for the disaster!!!!!!!!
The collar is not working for this pattern, and I need advice to find a solution.
First of all...I have worked the collar two (2) times and the last time I worked it with a larger needle. What happens when the collar is finished? it is tooooooo short and tight for the front of the sweater and pulls up about 2-3 inches when you put on the sweater and stand up...it does not stretch out enough...it is an absolute disaster. What solution can there be for this pattern. Maybe I am not reading the pattern correctly PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!:knitting: F

It's hard to say if you're reading it correctly without knowing what it says. Perhaps you need to pick up more sts for it and knit it longer.

What is the name of the pattern and which book does it come from? I looked it up and could only find "A Flutter of Loops", which also looks pretty old. I don't think that's what you're talking about?. . .

The pattern is Plymouth Yarn # 1416....Long Garter St Kimono...
here are the instructions....Neckband...
Starting at lower edge of right front, pick up and knit 1 st for each ridge, then pick up and knit 1 stitch for 1 stitch across back of neck (make it an odd number of sts), then pick up and knit 1 st for each ridge down left front to lower edge- make sure total number of sts is an odd number. Work in 2 color garter st for 6". Bind off with larger needles.
Here is the 2 color garter st pattern:
Row 1 & 2 knit with main color
Row 3 & 4 *(K1, Sl1) using second color, repeat from * to last st, end K1.
Repeat rows 1-4 for pattern.
Hope this helps

Is it the collar itself or the bind off that is too tight? Maybe you aren't picking up enough stitches or your bind off is not loose enough. You could try a stretchier bind off and see if that makes the difference.

Here's a link with a bunch of bind off ideas you can try:

Thanks to all and sundry replies and reading web sites on knitting I rethought my counting and found I did not include the second color pattern because it did not look like a ridge.....confusing on the part of the pattern. But all is finished and worked out well.
Pattern is really nice for those of you who would like to try it. One variation I made was to only make a 3" flat band for the collar so as to match the patern without folding over to show the underside. Now on to more complicated patterns...LOL
