I'm making a shrug to my own pattern.

I cast on 40 stitches with the long tail method of casting of its 'stretchiness'. Did a 2 x 2 rib on 4mm needles for 20 rows, then changed to 7mm needles for stocking stitch, increasing by 2 stitches in every second row until I got 80 stitches. Knitted those 80 stitches in stocking stitch for 50 cm, and then decreased 2 stitches in every second row until back down to 40 stitches and then back with the 4mm needles and the 2 x 2 rib again. I tried the only cast-off I know, which is the basic knit bind-off, but its far too tight and means the rib isn't stretchy, which its supposed to be. The long-tail cast on side is just fine.

Any ideas on how to make the cast off as stretchy as the cast-on?

I am making the Lion Brand pattern: Cable Comfort Knit Throw using Wool Ease Thick and Quick (80% acrylic/20% wool). I have 3 of the 5 Panels completed. Should I steam block the panels before seaming together? I thought it would make for easier seaming. If I do block I will use blocking wires (stainless steel welding rods) and pin it to my KP blocking mats, then steam and let dry. It seems like I should but I am not as expereinced as some of you fabulous knitters. Any advice is apprecieated. Thanks you!!!

Any suggestions for hat patterns for a 1 year old? So many seem geared towards small babies or full fledged toddlers!

I'm ready to tackle circular needles or double pointed needles, but am still relatively new at the knitting thing . . so nothing too complex please!!

Thanks!

Although one of my teachers used to always say that 'no question is stupid if you don't know the answer', I'm pretty sure this is a stupid question:

I know how to knit a YO. Heck, I've done it mistakenly a dozen times. ;)

But, when a pattern specifically calls for one, do you knit the stitch? Or is just the act of bringing the yarn around all that's called for?
any loom knitters here
i started knitting on the knifty knitters
didnt think that i would like it
well it is fascinating
made some scarfs and a few neck warmers
now i am making 3 three shawls on a straight board
i usually have 10 different things on the needles and i thought
that using these looms that it would put an end to that
not true
another thing about these looms i can use up the goofy yarn that i bought
youknow novelty yarn
it makes a very pretty scarf
so i have another passion
anyone else

So, I'm still very much a beginner to knitting, but I've been knitting some hats and scarves that I give away at this soup kitchen where I volunteer.

Before I give these away, I thought I'd take some pictures of them first.

A lot of the decorative elements were done with the help of this website.

1) Camouflage scarf-just finished this one tonight from my leftover camouflage yarn. It was done by looping the yarn around the needle twice instead of just once for each knit. That's why it's so loose and looks as if it was knit with really thick needles. Not sure what the technique is called.

2) Green headband-simple headband made from double pointed needles. 2x2 ribbing. Remind me to cast on more stitches next time; it's a bit small.

3) Camouflage hats-both knit on straight needles, then sewn together into a circle.

4) Green scarf-cabling...but like braiding three stripes; and bobbles on the other side, both at regular intervals. Ribbing at the ends

5) Blue and red scarf-don't remember what the technique is called. Every row, I switched colours one stitch after the row before. Made for a simple triangle design.

6, 7, 8) Blue and green scarf-I think this is called double knitting. Scarf, basically two layers thick. I planned this out pretty meticulously and was able to write the five classic elements of asian mythology (or whatever they're called) into the scarf. Blue background with green words: this is the right side. On the other side of the scarf (green background with blue words), you'll see the mirror image of these characters. It's not a big deal since these particular characters are pretty much left-right symmetrical to begin with. For those of you with asian languages installed on your computer:

金-gold/metal
木-wood
水-water
火-fire
土-earth

I'm going to try to knit some mittens with my double pointed needles soon.
