So I decided to try to knit a pair of socks. I am very nervous about this as patterns NEVER make sense to me. I am not new to knitting so should know that it always makes sense when you are actually working the project. BUT...this has me stumped. (

Back to Basics Sock pattern on Knitty.com

Here is the part I don't get.....

Heel will be worked back and forth over sts on Needle 2 only, as follows:
Row 1 [RS]: K48, W&T.
Row 2 [WS]: P28, W&T.
Row 3 [RS]: K27, W&T.
Row 4 [WS]: P26, W&T.

Rows 5-22: Continue in stockinette st, working each short row 1 st shorter than the last. Row 22 is 8 sts long.

I understand short rows, have knitted them before. What I don't understand is how I am going to end up with 8 stitches on the 22nd row.

Probably seems silly, but I just can't start this pattern until I understand it! :) Any help appreciated!

Ok I am using a pattern chart for the first time and have run into a few questions/problems. First the instructions tell me:
Using Smaller needle, CO 308 stitches.
Set up Row (RS): Work 5 stitched in Garter st, place marker(pm), work section A of Knot Chart once, pm work section B to last 19 sts, pm, work section C once, pm, work in Garter st to end. keeping first and last 5 sts in Garter st, repeat rows 1 and 2 of chart for 2", ending with a WS row. Change to larger needle and work even until entire chart is complete. Repeat rows 1-32 of chart until piece measures approx 60" from the beginning, ending with row 32. Change to smaller needles. Repeat rows 1 and 2 of chart for 2". BO all sts.
Ok, these instructions make total sense, until you come to a part in the chart where there is a 28-st-repeat. On the rows before five they were easy to follow. When I get to row five there is a st that is half (2 sts) in the 28-st-repeat or section B in the instructions and half (2 sts) in section C. I am not sure what I am supposed to do here. There is a bold line on both ends of the 28-st-repeat (section B) but on this row (row 5) the line does not exist. Am I supposed to just keep repeating the entire row instead of just one section. or should I keep with reapeating section B just follow the lines demarcating the repeat from the row before?
Here is a pic of the chart

Hello, I've just started knitting and I was wondering about what this part of the beret pattern meant "When decreasing, ensure that the number of sts decreased corresponds with the number of yarn overs. Where this is not possible, work K1 instead."

Here is the rest of the pattern:
Wave Lace Stitch Pattern:
Row 1 (RS): k1, *k2tog 3 times, (k1, yo) 6 times, k1, k2tog 3 times; rep from *, k1
Rows 2 and 4: p all sts, including yo's
Row 3: k

CO 154 sts. Purl 1 row.
Work Wave Lace Stitch Pattern.
When work meas 6.25" (16 cm) ending with Row 4 completed, dec on Row 1 by omitting all yo's - 106 sts
Cont in pat and dec every 4th row 2 more times - 10 sts
K 1 row.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. With tapestry needle, thread tail through remaining sts and pull tightly to close top of hat. Weave in ends on WS.
Pick up 154 sts along CO edge.
K Row 1, dec 72 times evenly across row by working k2tog - 82 sts
Work in garter st (knit every row) until band meas 2" (5 cm).
BO.

I am also not sure about the part that says dec every 4th row 2 more times. Do I continue to decrease in the 1st row or am I now doing it in the 4th row, and if so how? Thank you so much :).

Hi everyone,
I have a pattern for Lion Brand Fitted Top using Vanna's Choice Glamour yarn, but I don't quite understand this part of the pattern:

Cast on 93 (105, 117, 129, 141) sts. Work in K3, p3 Rib until piece measures 10 (11, 12, 13, 14) in. (25.5 (28, 30.5, 33, 35.5) cm) from beg, end with a RS row.
Shape Right Front
Row 1 (WS): Work in Rib as established across 51 (57, 63, 69, 75) sts only, slip rem 42 (48, 54, 60, 66) sts onto a holder.
Row 2 (neck dec): K3, p3, k3, p2tog, work in Rib to end – 50 (56, 62, 68, 74) sts rem at end of this row.
Rep last row (neck dec) every 4 rows 17 more times, AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 12 (13, 14, 15, 16) in. (30.5 (33, 35.5, 38, 40.5) cm) from beg, end with a RS row and shape armhole as follows

Does the pattern mean for me to continue to just knit the K3 P3 rib and then do the decrease row or does it mean to knit Row 1 and Row 2 17 times? Thank you for any help. Here the link to the pattern. You need a lion brand account to view pattern.

I would like to ask a question.

I am ready to start designing another pattern. My interest this time is for patterns for boys in the 7yoish range..

Any ideas for what knitters for boys would like to see?

A couple of the stronger suggestions Ive had are; A hoodie with kangaroo pockets and subtle cables or just plain.

A hat, scarf, and mittens(mittens?)

heres my idea for a hat, scarf and mittens.....what do you think?

a tractor at one end of the scarf and then tractor tracks all the way up the scarf to the end, done in knit and purl?(reversable) or should i do color work(non reversable).

for the hat, i was just gonna do tractor tracks around the brim and stockenette for the rest of the hat? or should i do little tractors around the brim and stockinette for the rest?

for the mittens, im not sure how i should do those? Plain? Put a tractor on it?

ALL suggestions are welcome and requested.

or do you have any better ideas?

I am working on a pattern from class that the teacher altered and I don’t know what steps to all do or how to follow it exactly. I am making a pull over children’s sweater. It is a plymouth yarn pattern.(640-05)

These are the actual instructions according to the size I am making.(which is a boy’s size 6)

Neck Shaping(front of sweater): Work across 24 sts, turn. Working back, decrease 1 st at neck edge on next and every following row 2 times, then every following alternate row 2 times: 20 sts. Continue even until total length is same as back to shoulder shaping, end with the WS row. Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of the next 2 alternate rows, then bind off 6 sts at the beginning of the following alternate row. Reattach yarn at neck and work across 18 sts, place on stitch holder for front neck, work across remaining 24 sts. Decrease 1 st at neck edge on next and every following row 2 times total, then every following alternate row 2 times: 20 sts. Continue even until total length is same as back to shoulder shaping, end with the WS row. Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of the next 2 alternate rows, then bind off 6 sts at the beginning of the following alternate row.

My instructor pretty much crossed out that section and told us she wanted us to do both shoulders at the same time. Her instructions start me off as:

Neck Shaping:
knit 24 sts, add new yarn and knit 18 sts. Put the 18 sts on a stitch holder, then continue across the 24 sts using the new yarn. Knit 21 sts, ssk, k1.

Then I don’t know what to do. At one point I wrote down k1, k2tog and work across knit. Dec. on purl rows. It would be nice to have step by step row instructions to follow.

But she was not specific on what I all do on the knit/purl rows and where exactly I decrease??? The instructor won’t be back to teach for at least 1 1/2 months and I would like to complete the sweater. I am not even sure how I go about stitching/sewing up the sides of the sweater and attaching the sleeves.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!!
