problems with casting on additional stitches

So the part of the pattern I'm working on goes like this:
Row 28: purl all the way across. At the end of the row, cast on 5 stitches.
Row 29: knit all the way across. At the end of the row, cast on 5 stitches.
Row 30: purl

Well I did row 28 and 29 fine, but when I try to purl the new stitches, I get a long string of yarn between the needles. I didn't cast on anything fancy, just made a loop and slipped it on the needle (I'm a beginner at this whole knitting thing, and don't know all the proper terms yet). I don't know what's wrong, but I didn't have this problem when knitting the first 5 additional stitche. Any ideas?

The backward loop cast on does that and it's annoying isn't it? .. I prefer using a cable cast on or knitted cast on for adding stitches.

Yep, the loop CO at the end of rows does that; CO at the beginning of Rows 29 and 30 using the knit or Cable CO instead.

you have gotten all the important info from the girls.
Check the video tab up top on this site: there are videos about casting on. If you check for the cable cast on (or the other terms you read up top) you will find instruction videos for them all. The terms will come with time, just take your time when you get to it and check out videos here every once in a while. There is a lot to learn - and also terms will get easier then.
