What does "slip one purl wise (edge stitch), purl across to last st.(I know this), slip one purl wise (edge stitch)?

It just means to slip the stitch without purling it, but slip it as if you were going to purl it (rather than knit it). It will give you a more even edge since you're only working these stitches on the knit side.
