Copyright Question

I recently came across a pattern from the 1950s that is for a knit dickey that I just love and I'd like to alter it to make it into a neck gaiter (like one I had made a while back for myself) that is suitable to use while running in the cold. If I like how it turns out, I'd like to be able to make them custom for people. However, I am not sure on the guidelines for selling it without copyright infringement. How would I go about this?

If you're in the US there's no restriction on what you do with an item made from a pattern. The copyright is on the pattern itself - the words that explain how to make it, and the pictures of it. Go ahead, just use your own pictures to advertise it.

It would be an idea to credit the original pattern so people don't get the idea that it's your own.
