Please help with a stitch/trim

Hi, I was wondering if some one could give me a little bit of help with getting a stitch/trim pattern down. I am not sure what type of stitch I am trying to do here (I am pretty new at crochetting), I thought I had it but mine I find stands up too much.

Here are some photos of what I am trying to do:

And this is what I have done:

I find mine the "braid" is standing out too much. I also find that when I connect the colors it starts to fold/lean one way, rather than lie flat.

Please help. :)

What kind of stitch are you using--sc (single crochet) or ss (slip stitch)? In general, single crochets are taller than slip stitches. If you're already using a ss, though, you may have to switch to a less bulky yarn to get the braid flatter.
