in next st[p1,k1] 3 times
 

I am getting really confuse. The pattern wants be to k10, p6, in next st work[p1,k1] 3 times.....what do they mean in next st work. i need to increase and I thought I was doing it right but I am still off by a lot of sts.

Yes, that's an increase. In the knit st, knit and leave it on the L needle, move the yarn to p1, move it back to k1, and so on until you have 6 sts on the R needle.
