Socks
 

My sock pattern tells me to cut yarn after I divide the yarn for the heel. Do I actually do this or does it mean something? If I do how l keep the yarn and how do I start knitting the heel piece?

If the pattern says to cut the yarn it probably means just that. Cut it leaving a tail.

Usually it will tell you where to go next to start working again. What does the pattern say? To start in you just leave a tail hanging and start working where it says to.

I've never heard of a sock pattern telling you to do that. All the ones I've done have you leaving part of the stitches for the socks on the back needles, working back and forth and turning on the front needles for the heel shaping. I wouldn't cut it but keep following the other directions. The whole idea is that socks are all knit in one piece so they are smooth and comfortable. Cutting the yarn like that would give you a bump where you ended one piece of yarn and began another. That's not what you want to be standing on all day when you're wearing the socks.

Are you starting a different color ??

That's what I was thinking, maybe striped socks? But I think I'd use self striping yarn for this if that were the case. Eliminate that bump. Although that would make sense since the join is on the side of the sock.
