Reading pattern

Hello all,

I'm just starting out knitting and having problems reading my pattern for a blanket. I keep doing what I thing is right but it looks like it is only increasing on one side. Below is what the pattern is saying

Cast on 3 sts
Knit
Row 1: inc in first st, K to last 2sts, inc in next st, K1-2 sts increased.
Row 2: purl
Row 3: inc in first st, K to last 2sts, inc in next st, K1-2 sts increased.
Row 4: Knit
Repeat rows 1-4 until 131 sts

So what I'm doing is:
cast 3
knit
do an knitted increase, 1 knit, then another knitted increase
purl
(at this point there are 5 sts)do an knitted increase, 3 knit, then another knitted increase
knit

and repeat but as i said it seems like only one side is increasing. I'm i doing it right and maybe just being tighter on one side over the other?

On the first couple rows, there won't be any/many sts in the middle. So it goes like this for the first few rows-

R 1, kfb, kfb, k
R 3, kfb k2, kfb k1
R 5, kfb k4, kfb k1 and so on. As you get more sts in the middle the increases will be on both edges.

Thanks soo much! That makes more sense and maybe now my end stitches wont be big loops.
