DK to Worsted...

Hey there...

Been a while hasn't it?

Well...had a question...and I am sure the answer is probably GAUGE...but I wanted to ask it anyway...

I found a pattern I like...and it calls for DK weight...I have tonnes of yarn I could use for this...and I would rather use from what I have before I get out and start buying more yarn...

If I do the pattern out of Worsted Weight...rather than DK...I would drop a size? yes?

Probably - go up in needle size and do a 'sample' to see how many sts per inch you get, then see if that gauge divided into the sts for a smaller size will get the finished measurement you need.

I was looking at gauge...it said 21 inches on 4mm for a 4x4 square...

That's for the dk - you can probably get that with the worsted on a size 5, but it's going to be way too tight. Go up to an 8 or 9 (5mm or 5.5) and see what you get. Will probably be more like 4 sts per inch than 5, but you really have to do a sample - of course that's not really like a swatch you know....

Then divide your sts per inch into the sts given for the smaller size and see if that comes out to the measurements to fit you.

Ok...so this is the pattern page on Rav...

I would need to do an xl in dk...I am not sure I get the dividing thing...

I HATE the way Drops patterns are written. :zombie: I don't see where it says divide. Is it for the sleeves?

Ok, that one shouldn't be too hard to adjust. CO one or 2 sizes smaller than you'd normally knit, according to whatever gauge you come up with. Do the decs and incs until the back sts measure about half what you want for a finished size, work the sleeves and decrease the yoke. It's similar to Shalom which is a top down pattern with ribbing on the yoke. It's done in a light bulky yarn which may work better with your yarn. You could change the ribbing to the wider rib that the Drops pattern has.
