problem with pattern
I'm knitting a jumper with a cable pattern and the row I'm about to start says "Next row and every following alt row: Work K for P and P for K"........can anybody tell me what I need to do please? Thank you.

That could mean when the next stitch on your needle is a knit, purl it, if it looks like a purl, knit it. That will make seed stitch, but that may not be what it means - it may mean "if you knit it on the other side, purl it on this side" which makes ribbing, common in cable patterns. If you can link the pattern or a picture or give us its name we can be a little more specific in helping you.

My first thought was if knit knits and purl purls, but now I'm not so sure ...

The sweater is a pretty combination of reverse stockinette and stockinette stitch patterns. So, looking at the stitches you're about to work, if you see a V on the needle knit it and if you see a bump or loop, purl it.
