What cast-on stitch for top down sweater

This is my first attempt with knitting top down sweater and would like to know what is the best cast-on stitch.

Hi, welcome to KH. Best? Ask 10 people, you'll likely get 10 different answers...well, maybe not. I've used both long tail and knitted cast ons for top downs.

I always use long tail unless the pattern specifies one for reason.

I use longtail for most of my cast ons. If I'm going to pick up stitches in a cast on I might use knit CO; or you could use a provisional if you're going to pick up for a neckband.

It depends on what kind of sweater it is. If this is a button cardigan, you can do long tail. If it is a pullover, I would suggest the German Twisted cast on as it will stretch over the head. Amy has a video on this in the Free videos cast on section at the top of the page.
