Shaping armhole - feeling lost!!!
 

Hi Everyone,

Im new to this site, and I hope someone here can help me out.
I can knit quite well, so I'd like to think that, as like today I just can't seem to understand this shaping.... I know its going to be so easy once some has explained it me:





147 st on the ndle.

Keeping patt correct, cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. (139st)

I've got this bit -
right side, row 1 beg, cast off 4
wrong side, row 2 beg cast off 4.

Then pattern reads:
Dec 1 st at each end of next 5 rows, then on foll 3 alt rows (123 st)

Does this mean
dec 1 st at each end of the right side for 5 rows as in every alt row?

and then a further 3 rows on every right side?

Nope dec at the beg and end of the next 5 rows. So that's on both the RS and WS rows - rs, ws, rs, ws, rs. Then, do a ws row with no decs and dec on the RS rows only 3 times.

The way I read it, it's decreasing on every row (RS and WS) for 5 rows, then 3 more times on alternate rows after that (which side that would put them on I don't know... I lost track.) But that's more a slightly educated guess than anything, and based on the notion that otherwise they'd have just said "dec by one at each end of the next 8 alt rows" and left off the distinction between 5 rows and 3 alt rows.

But just 'cos it makes sense to me don't make it so.

Thanks. Sometimes pattern writers and I don't really speak the same language. I guess the translations from Middle English don't always work or something.

As long as you're not translating into Elvish...
