To turn heel

I am making socks. My instructions say, Row1: K1, Sl1 for 17 sts. Does this mean k1 sl1, 17 times or k1 then sl1 for 17 sts? I am not sure what it means to do???

It means to alternate the k1 and the sl1 for the next 17 sts. This will give you a reinforced heel.
