Knitting mitten help!

Hello! I'm new here so I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question... but i'm hoping one of you lovely knitters will be able to help me out!
Basically I'm knitting mittens.
The next bit on my pattern says exactly this: (I have 24 sts on my needle at the point)
Shape thumb:
Next Row (RS): K12, turn, cast on 6 sts, p12, turn.
Cont. to work on these 12 sts only, leaving rem 6 sts on needle.
Cont. to work in st st for a further 10 rows.

My brain seems to have completley failed me here. I've knitted in the past and this is my first proper project since starting again but if I do exactly what it says I don't end up with the 6sts she says I should have on the needle?
I'm not sure if I'm just missing the point or what but could someone help me out? I'm so confused right now! :oo:
Thank you so much!

Hi and welcome. You've picked the perfect place to post.
When you turn after casting on 6sts and purl 12sts, you'll be purling back over the 6 cast on and 6 of the original 12sts (bolded) from the beginning of the row. That'll leave 6sts sitting unworked. The 12sts you're working on now for 10rows will actually form the thumb. You'll get back to the 6sts that are hanging out on the needle after the thumb is finished.
"Next Row (RS): K12, turn, cast on 6 sts, p12, turn.
Cont. to work on these 12 sts only, leaving rem 6 sts on needle.
Cont. to work in st st for a further 10 rows."
Can you post a link to the pattern?

Hi and welcome to KH.

Knit across 12 (of the 24) stitches. Then you turn your work and cast on 6 new stitches and then turn your work again (so now you would have 6 new stitches, as well as the 12 you knit before the cast on; you're only going to be working with 6 of these old stitches, so the other 6 old stitches are the "rem 6 sts on needle" that you leave alone). Next, you would purl 6 cast on stitches and 6 old stitches. Turn again and continue working on just these 12 stitches.

Hope that helps.
