Knitting in The Round

The pattern I am going to try is not specific as to how many needles i should cast on to so I was wondering if there is a difference in the way it will look if I cast on to 3 or 4 needles.
Thanks!

Sounds like you're using dpns for this. Some people prefer 3 needles and other prefer 4. Four needles takes some of the tension out of the knit tube but it also means more changing from one needle to another. As long as your sts fit comfortably on the needles without falling off. it's up to you which to use.
