Hello Rifka - I found a garter stitch shawl that begins with 5 stitches rather than three:

Easy Garter Stitch Shawl

Does your shawl follow the basic premise of construction as this one? How does your shawl differ from this one?

What shape do you want your finished shawl to take?

Are you starting from one side, rather than the top or bottom?
If so, you mark the end of the row where you're increasing (until it becomes obvious) and when you get to the size you want, you k2tog where you had been doing the increases. If you were doing yarn over increases, to keep the eyelets you k2tog, yo, k2tog--in other words, you take one extra stitch out to account for the yarn over.
