Need help with unpicking a cast on

I am knitting a sweater for my grandbaby and have picked up stitches along sides and neck of sweater the pattern now reads "unpick provisional cast on." Which I tried to do by following a tuturial, its not working though. :(

Which provisional cast on did you use? There are several of them.

If you've tried from one end of the cast on and it's not working, you might try undoing the cast on from the other end. Sometimes, you make a mistake in the provisional cast on though and it doesn't un-do very neatly. Then you just have to snip and pull out the waste yarn, stitch by stitch. It's not pretty but it works.

Not sure, but I hold the one needle in my right hand and yarn in the left and use my thumb to wrap the yarn around my left thumb to then put the stitch on. When I tried to pull the yarn from the starting point of my cast on (where the tail is), but it didn't unzip like it was supposed to. :knitting:

That sounds like a backward loop cast on which really isn't a provisional cast on, meant to be pulled out to give you live stitches. Look about two-thirds of the way down this page to see 3 different provisional cast ons that you can use next time.

You can still snip out the cast on you have, it just won't pull out as a single thread.

My favorite provisional cast on is the crochet hook method. There's no actual crochet involved so it's easy.

I've used this cast on for 20+ yrs, but didn't really start knitting patterns till a couple years ago. Sounds like I should change to a provisional one, to make it easier. Thanks!
