New knitter needing help with the start of my first blanket pattern!

I am a new knitter, with only hats and scarves for experience. I am trying an "easy" seed stitch blanket, but am having difficulty getting started, as I don't understand the beginning. I know how to do the seed stitch, but I have not yet done increases or used circular needles, both of which are required for this pattern. I am used to casting on a certain "large" number of stitches, and then knitting, but if I'm reading this pattern correctly, it says to cast on 2 stitches. Then it says 1st row: inc 1st in first st. K1. 3 sts. I don't understand......help please!

Welcome to Knitting Help!

It always helps to have pattern names and links when asking questions. What it sounds like though is that you're making the blanket diagonally. It also says to increase "in" first stitch so I would do a KFB (knit front and back)- instructions are in the video section linked above. Once you get a bunch of rows you'll see how the pattern works.

As for the circular needle..that is because as you increase you'll be getting more and more stitches and it's much, much easier to have them on the cable. You couldn't easily make a blanket in one piece on straights. To use them just turn your work like you always do. The only difference is your other needle is attached. :)

Here is the pattern....

Yep, it's done diagonally. They only use the KFB on that first row thoug. They then use YO (yarn over) for the increases. Those are very easy and create a decorative eyelet. Info in the increase section.

So just follow the pattern as written and it'll gradually get bigger and make more sense. I haven't made a diagonal blanket, but I've done many dishcloths that way.

What kind of yarn are you using?

I'm using the yarn the pattern calls for, Bernat Baby Blanket, it's super bulky

That won't affect the pattern. Do you have more questions?

No I'm good, thanks! I think I have it figured out for now, thanks to you!
