New to knitting

I think knitting could be a fun new hobby. What are the best needles and yarn to start with? Should I pick up a starter kit and if so which one?

Thanks,
Jessie

Welcome to knitting help! Knitting is a great hobby! Just be patient and expect to make a few mistakes a ask questions.

Oh boy...you could get a dozen different answers with that question. :teehee:

So... what I always suggest is US size 8 or 9 needles and some smooth, solid colored, worsted weight (#4) yarn. No fuzzy or novelty yarn. I think bamboo needles are good to start with because they are less slippery. We have a bunch of great videos here that is the best way to learn.

Welcome to KnittingHelp, Jessie! Others will most likely voice their opinions, but generally I recommend picking a set of medium size needles (US Sizes 5-8) and a skein of yarn to practice with. You could pick up a starter kit as it lends to near instant gratification, that's how most of us got addicted to this craft in the first place :) Which one would really depend on what you want to make, my first projects included making mug mats or coasters.

Ok thanks I'll give that a try.
