Please help a total newbie

Hi Everyone, I am a total newbie, just started learning yesterday...I have watched a couple of videos and practised along, and then went out and bought the I taught myself to knit book. The problem I am having is by the time I knit to my second or third row, the knit is becoming so tight I can barely get my needle through...how do I loosen my tension, what am I doing wrong? Please help me before I poke a needle right through my finger! Thanks, Linda

Welcome to Knitting Help!
Good for your for teaching yourself to knit. Getting tension right is something that improves with time spent knitting. Check now that you're not knitting on the tips of the needles. Make sure that you're bringing the yarn around the fat part of the needle to form the next stitch.

Thanks for that tip, that is exactly what I was doing, knitting on the tips.
