provisional cast on
Hi, could someone please explain why you would need a provisional cast on when you are knitting in the round. Doesn't make sense to me! thx (don't have a pattern - a friend was asking)

You would use any provisional cast on to have live stitches at the beginning of the pattern in order to add an edging, or perhaps make a symetrical other half of a pattern.

You could use a provisional cast on if you wanter to pick up sts from the cast on then knit in the other direction. You might use it to match the cast off to the cast on row.. It's sometimes used on hats to hem the cast on live sts to a subsequent row. And I've run out of ideas. I'm sure there are more reasons for the provisional cast on.

Good answers. A provisional cast on lets you leave your options open.

You could use a provisional cast on for a hem. It makes a lovely picot and straight hem on something like a hat.

I just finished the "Sweetheart" pullover. The Front, Back and Sleeves called for a provisional cast on. The reason: to eventually turn up the "hem" and work a picot edge. The open loops of the provisional cast on (when waste yarn is removed) are worked together with the current live stitches on the needle when this hem reaches about 1.5".

Provisional cast on
Thank you for all the great responses - appreciate it!

This hat pattern has ribbing inside the band. It calls for stitching the ribbing in placeafter the rest of the hat is finished. I used Judy's Magic Cast On and then held the unused live stitches to knit together with the stockinette stitches from the outside band, as Jan said for a hem. It worked so well I did another band the same way.

Gorgeous sweater, Art Lady and a beautiful illustration of the use of a provisional cast on. Oh, how I've missed seeing your lovely knitting!
