my seams are terrible, advice please?!

so i just finished a cardigan and sewed up the seams for the arms and they look awful. i'm going to take it out and retry, but would love some advice so i don't just repeat the mistakes i was making. thanks for any input in advance!

did you try pinning it first? and then sewing it together... I have a hard time sometimes lining up the sides without first sticking them in the correct position.

Also, what kind of stitch are you using for your seam? I use a "whipstitch" and the seams generally look pretty good.

I generally use mattress stitch to close seams
