Elementary question/guage swatch
If my pattern's gauge is:

I always do my swatches at least 4"x4", so your gauge of 4 stitches and 6 rows = 1" would translate into 16st and 24rows = 4". Do that, then measure from the top of your needle to the bottom of your work, and from side to side and it should be close to 4x4. If not you may need to change needle size if your gauge is consistently off.
