Knitting for Soldiers?

Does anyone know of any projects or groups that are knitting things for soldiers? I've read some groups knit hats, earwarmers, or helmet liners. I want to make sure a unit actually wants these things before I start knitting. I can probably get some women at work to knit with me.

Socks. I know they always need and truly appreciate nice socks (the sand EATS them)

Try this site:

That's how I got ideas for the packages we've sent my cousin. Socks it a great idea but be careful to choose the right type of yarn.

If you're going to do socks, they need to be black or olive drab green. There are lots of requests for those neck coolers, too.

My knitting group is going to be doing some stuff for Marines. I'm going to be talking to the local Marines here, to see what they can use and what they can't. I'll let you know what I find out.

Another good site is Booksforsoldiers.com, very nice, you can something as simple as sending get well cards to the hospitals, just writing, sending sun screen, snacks, paperbacks, anything. There is also a listings of what branches and even emails of soldiers who want to hear from home. Some soldiers collect postcards from all 50 states and compete doing that, so anyone can help out.

Another project that I've mentioned before as a KAL idea...

It would always be great to knit these up and give them to a service member as memorbilia. I'm not sure if they could wear these or not, BUT...the funds go right back to the Red Cross, and they DO help us military folks quite a bit. More info on that here: http://www.redcross.org/services/afe...0_321_,00.html

I was at a yarn shop in Allyn, Washington just this past Monday, and they have a group of women that are knitting helmet liners for the troops in Iraq. I may venture out and join them this week when I am back at the lake place.

pat.
