another pattern question

I'm a relatively new knitter and I'm trying to figure out a pattern from the 365 Knitting Stitches a Year calendar. For the March 22 butterfly lace pattern, I start out with 31 stitches cast on (multiple of 8 +7). After following the instructions for row 1 I come out with 27 stitches. I have no clue where I'm going wrong. I knit 2 stitches together when it says to. My problem may be in the yarnover, which I'm still very new at. The pattern saysfor row 1 to K1, *K2tog, YO, K1, YO, sl 1, K1, psso, K3 rep from * to last 6 stitches, K2tog, YO, K1 YO, sl 1, K1, psso, K1. When it says to yarnover, do I knit 1 with the yarnover and then knit another one for the K1 or not? I'm not sure if I'm explaining this well enough. Any help would be REALLY appreciated!

I was having this same issue with yarn forward - i was counting the next k1 st as part of the yf, so i was never where i was supposed to be at the end of the row. the act of bringing the yarn over the needle itself is YO, then knit into the next st as called for in the pattern. Does that make more sense?

(I edited this because I confused myself...)

Yes, that's what I did. That's where I came up with 27 stitches at the end of the row when I should have had 31. Maybe I'll try it again. Thanks a bunch.

When I wrote it out, I ended up with 31. Every time they say to do a yo, put the yarn over the needle to the front. As you knit the next stitch, you'll get the extra stitch.

I'll write it out, if that will help:

k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, (sl1, k, psso), k3 = 9 st
k2tog, yo, k1, yo, (sl1, k, psso), k3 = 8 st
k2tog, yo, k1, yo, (sl1, k, psso), k3 = 8 st

k2tog, yo, k1, yo, (sl, k1, psso), k1= 6 st
____
31 st

Hope this helps!

Ingrid, thanks for your help. I figured out what I was doing wrong. When the pattern said YO, sl 1, K1, before the K1 I put the yarn behind the work, which negated the YO, I guess. I redid the first 2 rows 4 times before I figured it out.
