What is the rule for creating a stripe pattern?
 

First of all, I'm new here and very glad to have found this forum!

Here is my question:

At one point I read somewhere that there is a certain pattern to creating a striped garment (ex scarf). I don't know if I'm making sense. Well, for example, and I'm just making this up in my head:

2 rows color A
2 rows color B
5 rows colo?r A
5 rows color B
3 rows color A
etc...

Anybody have any idea what I'm talking about?

The rule is you do whatever looks best to you.

Well for the first few numbers, she actually GIVES the pattern for it... so you can choose two numbers that are side by side and know that it will be eyepleasing! She *does* get into the theory behind it, but it's basically just some simple adding, and you end up with combinations that are based in nature. :D

Some people just hate "the math". I say go with whatever works for you...whether it be "math" or making it up.

Strangely enough... as a designer, I find myself artistically challenged. I often joke that I can't draw a straight line with a ruler. :roflhard: The way I've always designed is that I get a picture in my head, and I use whatever means necessary to get that picture on my hook {or now, on my needles}. I really liked the page at planetshoup since it gave me pleasing combinations for stripes and such when I didn't want to go with equally sized ones. I second guess my work *way* too much to "trust" myself on something like that. Weird... I know! :shock:
