Need help understanding pattern
I'm hoping to knit the Just Us Girls poncho for my granddaughter. This is a free Coats & Clark pattern. In reading the pattern instructions this section confuses me.

Row 3: K0 (1, 1, 1), [inc, place marker, P1, K1, P1, place marker, inc, K 0 (0, 1, 1] 3 times, inc, place marker, P1, K1, P1, place marker, inc, K0 (1, 1, 1) 28 (30, 33, 33) sts.

I'll be knitting the smallest size. So the size directions are outside the parentheses. Am I supposed to ignore the increase inside the brackets? Do I start with the P1, K1, P1 inside the brackets?

I don't understand where to increase the stitches. The instructions begin with 20 stitches at the end of the neck ribbing, but I should have 28 stitches after this section of instructions.

I've already bought the yarn for this project. Can't believe this is supposed to be an EASY project, lol. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Beverly-

I think the way this is written is what makes it look so complicated. They define "inc" as knitting into the front and back of the next stitch. Brackets indicate a stitch sequence that is repeated and have nothing to do with the size. So for your granddaughter's small poncho the row should go:
[inc, place marker, P1, K1, P1, place marker, inc] repeat between brackets twice more, then inc, place marker, P1, K1, P1, place marker, inc 28 sts.

The bracketed section brackets uses 5 of your original stitches and ends up being 7 sts. Then you just repeat to the end of the row.

Hope that solves the problem.

Thanks, jhelanee,

I hope it helps, too. Will find out fairly soon. Fortunately, it doesn't have to finished 'til next Fall or Christmas.
