Help please with Berroco "Lorraine" pattern

Hello everyone! This is my very first post here, I just recently discovered this site and have to say that it is great and I have been sucked in reading all of the threads! :D

I was hoping someone could help me with this free Berroco purse pattern: http://www.berroco.com/exclusives/lo.../lorraine.html

I can't even get past the first couple of lines! Here is the portion I'm having trouble with:

With larger needles, using Cotton Twist, cast on 59 sts.

Row 1 (WS): Purl.

Row 2: K1, k2tog, yo* p9, yo, sl 3 sts purlwise, k2 tog, psso, yo, rep from * twice more, end p9, yo, SSK twice, k1 51 sts.

I CANNOT, for the life of me, get those 51 stitches out of the 59 I start with. I worked this over and over, and it just isn't working. I've tried working it several different ways--one way, I run out of stitches before I finish the line, the other way, I don't have enough stitches. And if I work it backwards on paper or in my head, I just can't compute how those 59 stitches are turning into 51.

I'm sorry I'm not more clear, I'm just SO confused that I don't know how to explain it any better. I tried adding up the decreases and increases and it just doesn't work out, in my mind at least. I need to end up with 8 stitches less than I start with and the increase/decrease of Row 2 just doesn't add up for me.

Can anyone help? Thank you so much!!!

Jennifer

When I total up the stitches that you're left with, I get 51 from 59.

Are you passing all three slipped stitches over the k2tog?

Here's what I get

k1=1
k2tog=1
yo=1

k9=9
yo=1
sl 3, k2tog, psso=1
yo=1

do these 3 times

k9=9
yo=1
ssk=1
ssk=1
k1=1

51 stitches

Oh, thank you, THANK YOU! I was doing the three slipped stitches part wrong. I was just slipping them to the RH needle and then going on and working the next stitches. I will do it the way you laid it out. Thank you so much, I have been stewing over this for a couple of days (I am a fairly novice knitter so I think I may have bitten off more than I could chew!).

Thanks again, I am so glad I found this site!

Uh oh, I am confused again...I just went to try this out, and following the stitches above, I come out with 52. And I just counted out the stitches as laid out, and it's 52, not 51. So now I'm confused again. Is this pattern just poorly written, or am I just too inexperienced to figure this out?

:oops: The way I laid it out above IS 52. I added wrong. :shifty:

I think that last k1 on row one is a mistake.

If you do it without that k1, then the row starts with 3 and ends with 3.

If you look at the next row, row 3, it starts with 3 and ends with 3.

I'd give it a try without that extra k1 in the first row.

Sorry for any confusion.

;)

That looks like it will work! I will do that. Thanks so much, again! I appreciate the help so much.
