New to Knitting: Question about amount of yarn needed

Hello all--

I am very new to knitting. I'm working on my first project (a scarf, of course! ;) ) I have a question about the amount of yarn needed for a scarf. Obviously I know that a lot depends on what type of yarn you're using, what size needles, etc. But is there any sort of guideline or "rule of thumb" to estimate how many yards or grams of yarn you'll need? I'm worried that I didn't buy enough to complete my scarf.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

That's a tough one. It also depends on how long you want it, but I think most could be made with one skein. Again though skeins vary in length, too. Why don't you take a look at some of these patterns that might be similar to what you are thinking of making and you can get an idea from them.

Here's an online calculator that estimates the amount of yarn needed for a rectangular shape, using either stockinette or broken rib. If you are using a different stitch pattern you will probably be able to still use the calculator, but only as a rough guideline and you would definitely want to round up to be generous in your estimation.
