quick pattern question

I'm working on a darling purse for my daughter and am stumped by one of the lines in the pattern. Here is what the directions say:

K3, k2tog(k8, k2tog,k8)k2tog, k2, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k3 46 sts

Now that I think about it, it seems that I am to do the k8, k2tog, k8 as my pattern across the row and then knit the last three stitches. I was puzzled by the way it was written. Am I correct?

TIA

K3, k2tog(k8, k2tog,k8)k2tog, k2, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k3 46 sts

I don't know why the brackets are there, but there IS that k2 in the middle.

So it would be

K3, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k3

That works--it looks balanced.

I can't see why it's in brackets, either but when you count them all up they equal 46 sts.

K3, k2tog(k8, k2tog,k8)k2tog, k2, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k3

3 + 1 (when knitting two together you only get one st) + 8 + 1 + 8 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 8 + 1 + 8 + 1 + 3 = 46 sts

It works...

thanks!

Thanks to you both, and the purse turned out darling!! I used Berocco's Cotton Twist and a novelty yarn, both in variegated hot pinks and oranges. Dd loves it, and it was so quick to make that I'm ready to make one for her little girlfriend.
