Needle and pattern questions

If a pattern calls for DPN, can I use circular needles instead?

Circular needles have a certain limit as to how few stitches it can hold. DPNS are used for small diameter circular knitting - socks, mittens, the tops of hats, etc. If you can comfortably fit the stitches around a circular needle then by all means, but usually if a pattern calls for DPNS it is because the stitch count is too few to work properly on a circular.

You might be able to use a circular needle by using the Magic Loop method. Amy has a great video here:

yup there's a video there for two circ too... It just depends on what you are making really.

I always use the 2 circular needle method now for knitting small circumferences, socks, hats, beginning shawls knitted in the round, etc. There is no reason to use dpns if you prefer circs.

I don't use the Magic Loop method, but pull out the cable so it makes one loop on the right side, then knit around not quite to the loop, and pull it out again on the right side. I'm doing sleeves on a 29" circular this way.
